So, what’s your favorite solid? I’m talking beyond Kona here. I’ve noticed all the new Freespirit solids and wondering if the price is justifiable?
I often get inquiries when I post a project with Robert Kaufman’s Carolina Chambray. It’s my favorite solid. We created quite a few quilts in the book with it.
Though I do love the softness of the cross weaves and the texture of the shot cottons, I find chambray a good weight and easy to work with when quilting.
When you place it in different directions you notice the weave. This adds another dimension to the design of a quilt.
The natural is probably the one I get asked about the most, likely because I use it the most. I’ve made several boy print hst quilts out of it and endless amounts of pillows.
All the colors are vivid and rich, but I love the orange.
I added a little to my Destash of the chambrays if you’re in the mood for something new. You guys are quick, I even relisted. I added some cross-weave at a good deal.
But I’d like your thoughts.

Katie, I like Moda Bella Solids a lot…they have a bit more luster (and are softer) than Kona. I also like FS Designer Solids, but the FS Designer Voile is a little too thin for me. You just can’t beat Kona’s color range, so I have a lot of that. I love Moda Crossweaves and can’t use Shot Cotton because my machine hates it (although I do have some in the hopes that I’ll be able to get to it someday…) I haven’t ever tried Carolina Chambray, but thanks for the tip!

i’m backing a quilt today with a swath of carolina chambray. i believe the color is pacific, with royal warp and aqua weft. the color is beautiful, and the fabric has such a nice soft hand after washing. i agree with monet that the kona solids could be softer.

I love the pacific color. I thought about selling some and couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Me too – you got me hooked on those chambrays. Although I do like the moda crossweaves…but not as much as the chambray and I am also LOVING the quilter’s linens from Kaufman.

I just went “shopping.” hehe

Yes indeed you did. Thanks for helping me pay to expedite my passport.

I’m not a big Kona fan, and can’t figure out why they are so popular, other than color range and price (which could do it). I decided a few days ago that for future projects I will explore shot cottons, and those quilter’s linens sound wonderful. I’d also like to try the Moda solids, as I’d like a finer “hand” than Kona. (First I have to stick with a fabric diet for a while and replenish the stash budget.) Also recently cut up some chambray scraps, leftovers from a garment project, for a pillow, but that’s deep in the “will get to it someday” pile. Love all the pics and great suggestions… I’m updating my fabric wish list right now!

I understand the ‘pile.’

Love the Chambray. I will have to try some of that. Also, love the HST Diamond quilt (or whatever you’ve called it!) with the natural. I just finished a similar quilt top using white. I’m going to have to get me some more solids in different colors!

though i do use my fair share of kona cottons, i really love the robert kaufman essex linens. they’re a linen/cotton blend and i love the very subtle texture you get from them so they don’t read quite as flat as the konas do.
Sew Katie Did says
I love those too.

I’m partial to the Moda Bella Solids over the RK Kona. I also really like the Cross Weaves from Moda, although I have yet to actually sew with any…soon I hope! I love the feel of shot cottons, but I’ve not worked with them yet either. I’ll have to take a peek at the chambrays.

I think I’ve seen them disappear from some of the fabric store shelves due to production problems, they tend to be imperfect. I’ll have to take a closer look at the Bella solids. Are you coming today?

beautiful fabrics. I always love trying to find a cool solid that’s a little bit different!

I love the chambray that I bought from you. The bone color (I don’t know what it is actually called) is a great neutral that looks better than using a harsher white.
Sew Katie Did says
Yeah. So glad you like it. I’ve got another project going with it at the moment.

what is that solid in the first picture…top left…kind of aqua?

I have never heard of RK Carolina Chambray. I will be surfing to find so I can try it out. Thanks

Ok, so I couldnt wait!!! I went and ordered the Royal Chambray. After I get it into my hands, I will decide if I should order the Black. It’s funny, because black really is grey. hmmm. Looks great though!!!
