I’m collecting my whole cloth quilts for Tuesday’s class at Make*Do*Mend (spaces left if you’ve been putting this one off).
We’ll be covering basting, straight-line quilt design, the tools needed to create your design, bindings, quilting basics, squaring a quilt and hand sewing to finish a binding.
Thought it would be fun to show a gallery post.
This first one I did with the Alexander Henry raindrops and Kona is still my favorite.
I love the detail of the few lines in red and the Cake Rock Beach fabric binding. So sad that fabric is gone from my stash.
I played with zig-zags next and went with my old backing stand-by, flannel. I wouldn’t say this is a favorite, but it sure was cuddly and used up some fabric I had in my stash for a long time that I didn’t see using in any other way.
When I bought my new Bernina I got free-motion raindrops stuck in my head and got it out by attempting it on a whole cloth.
To cover up the rain-drops that didn’t look so great, I appliquéd some raindrops on top. Literally, this was a way to use up to the last drop of those little scraps of prints that I love.
This sunshine yellow Anna Maria Horner flannel makes its appearance on the back of many quilt.
I decided to return to the zig-zag that this fabric begs for.
Dark green flannel on the back pops the orange quilting.
These are the best beginner quilts. If you’ve been making quilt tops and tucking them away until you gain the skills to quilt them I encourage you to put on your walking foot, baste two fabrics together and get to work!
Or maybe I’ll see you Tuesday!

Although I am far, far away in New England, I really enjoy getting your blog. I’m totally inspired now to do some whole cloth quilting – perfect way to use some favorite fabrics, get in some quilting practice, and make a quilt for charity projects. I’m a big fan of flannel (and corduroy also) on the backs of quilts. Check out my blog if you ever get a chance – bucklandquilter.wordpress.com
Happy quilting….and wishing that I was planning a trip to the Northwest sometime soon.

love the few red lines you put in the quilt ~ really makes it! Really like the rain drops quilt ~ so appropriate for the Pacific Northwest ~ tho it hasn’t been raining here in Portland lately ~ we’ve been having lots of freezing weather. Yesterday it was 23 degrees! How do you do a Jack Frost quilt?
sewkatiedid says

Well you know what they say? Try something new everyday that scares the hell out of you.

Greetings from Alabama. I was delighted to find your quilting designs that did not contain feathers and flowers. As a beginner quilter, it is just too much to design and sew the quilt tops and then feel that your only options are to pay for someone to quilt your projects or SITD. Your concepts were original to me. Thanks for the ideas. I can do straight lines or wavy ones. Can’t wait to give it a try.
