I have been trying to form a Modern Quilt Guild of good people to come together and quilt for some time. Life has gotten in the way for many of us to make it happen. Let’s try to connect! Many thanks to Alissa for her leadership and spreading the word!
I formed a group for us to communicate. If you would like to keep up to date with The Seattle Modern Quilt Guild and be an active member you may join HERE.
I have quite a few projects on my plate presently and would be more than happy for some people with some leadership skills to step up with this baby. We could also brainstorm on a location that would be happy to hear the hum of machines.
Looking forward to the creative ideas!
Alas!! Another Modern Quilting Guild being made, but not in my area!! ahh!! Oh well…good luck with it!!
What a great idea. I actually live in Port Orchard but can occasionally make it across the water.
so weird you posted about this today…i posted about the kc area forming a chapter too. kismet!
good luck getting it going.
You know that I love this idea! 🙂 Not that I’ve got tons of time on my hands at the moment to organize, but maybe we can meet up over beers and discuss. I’ll email you 🙂 I still think Mosaic has potential as a location.
Yay! So exciting! I’ve signed up, and my friend Rebecca might as well (once I’ve forwarded this to her). 🙂
I am so glad you are doing this. I have also been thinking for some tim that I would love to start a Seattle Modern Quilting Guild based on Alissa’s. But, I didn’t know where to start. I also have a lot on my plate right now, but I would love to help.
Good luck with the quilt guild, such a good a idea for creative exchange!!! If only I lived in Seattle!!!!
I am across the puget sound from seattle. Where will you be meeting exactly? I would love to join if it is close.
Yay! So glad you got this set up 🙂 I already stopped over & joined 🙂 Looking forward to our first get together as a group 🙂
Hi Katie, I just stumbled onto your blog via a Google News feed I susbscribe to. I moved to WA from VA 5 years ago. I do have a quilt group where I live here in the islands so I don’t often attend guild meetings off island, just exhibits and other special quilt events. As a quilt historian, however, I’m curious by what you mean by the name “Modern Quilt Guild”? Do you mean you don’t make traditional patterns? I know there are a lot of guilds in the Seattle area, but I’m always excited when people talk about forming new groups because that tells me that quilting is still growing! Are you aware of the Contemporary Quilt Art Association in Seattle? Very lively productive group.

Hi Karen!
I love your question and have been pondering how to best answer.
My thoughts are the group will likely define what “Modern” means to them individually and collectively through their art. I envision high use of Improv techniques, and “stretching” of traditional quilting techniques. My original outreach with the idea produced an array of interested individuals that mixed these techniques, loved to blog and were excited by the variety of new designer fabrics being produced. Some of these artists are fond of producing a large amount of a quilt with solids.
I laugh a bit to think of any of this as “Modern” technique since it’s already all been done (i.e. Gee Bend), but there exists an excitement with a new generation of quilters out there. Social media has A LOT to do with this.
Learning new techniques whether “traditional” or “improv” have inspired and encouraged me to keep growing as an artist. And there is SO much out there to learn when it comes to quilting!
I am not aware of the Contemporary Quilt Art Association, I’ll have to check them out.
My hope is to plant the seed of this guilt and let some the members run with it. If it isn’t official I think people lose interest.
Katie
I will be moving to the Seattle area in the fall. I would love to join you ladies then. Will you be posting a link on your website about the group so I can find you when it is closer?
Thanks!!
I am on the east side. Carnation area. I would love to get together to expand my horizons.
we have lots of eastsiders that come. feel free to join us. i’ll send you a shutterfly invite.
I live in the San Juans. It’s too far for me to come but I plan to keep track of your doings because as a quilt historian (and occasional quilter) I am very interested in this whole idea of the Modern Quilt Guild. If you would ever like to plan a retreat on Lopez Island where I live, I’d be happy to help you with arrangements. There are many quilters here and I have a Quilt Research Shed I just built that I hope to make available to visiting quilters by and by. You can find my blog here http://karenquilt.blogspot.com/search/label/quilt-inside-quilt and here. I’ll be updating the Quilt Research Shed post soon for I have begun to move in!! Hope you can get your group rolling soon!
