::Pinning Away the Time::

March 25, 2010 By Katie

My friend Noelle stopped in the shop to discuss her upcoming class and shot some pictures of me pinning Roan’s quilt.  Another Half Square Triangle for the upcoming class at Fabric Crush.

Over 300 pins later,  I might have been a bit anal, but I hate shifting and the back is of course…Flannel!  I used the smaller curved pins and then tried some larger 2 inch quilting copper safety pins Sarah got into the shop.  I was a bit skeptical, but loved the amount of fabric they grabbed and bought three packs!

Collecting this fabric has spanned Roan’s lifetime and I’m always hoping to add a boy charm pack to the Etsy shop I can never seem to get going.

The solid is my favorite Carolina Chambray in natural.  I think it gives it a more classic look and won’t show dirt as plainly as white for the boy.

Thanks Noelle for the photos and Sarah for the use of the shop floor.  Quilting this will be my project at the next Seattle Modern Quilting Guild meeting in April.

For anyone with some time on their hands tonight, I believe there is one spot open in my Values Class at The Quilting Loft due to a cancellation.  Come join the fun!

It’s beautiful! I love all of the fabrics. I worked with the Carolina Chambray for the first time on a pillow cover for a swap – it is great. I wish it wasn’t so hard to find.

What a wonderful scrappy quilt! Love all the fabrics. I do so admire you in your dedication in basting. I hate that part of quiltingthe most. I’ve got three quilt tops done and they’re *resting* and waiting for me to make myself baste them. Thanks for sharing. xo,

I think I might be with Katy down there in the “strangely calming” bit of basting. Of course being in the shop and having people to talk to and loads of room to do it certainly helps.

Your quilt looks wonderful! I admire your basting work, the quilt looks so flatly!

I love to make quilt-tops but I always dread the basting part!

I love it I love it I love it!!!!!!!!!
(I also quite like basting – it’s strangely calming, don’t you think?)

I love how this quilt is coming along! I’m a crazy pinner too. The curved pins are the best for basting

I’m up there with the basting-is-meditative gang too. That quilt looks gorgeous, I can never think of sufficiently imaginative uses for half square triangles.

You and the quilt look great!
I actually like basting, but sadly my knees aren’t up for the job lately. Indeed, today I am dropping off a quilt at the long armer to have her baste it. I’m happy to quilt it, but I need the basting assistance right now.

Lucky you having all that space to lay out your quilt 🙂 It looks great!

I don’t mind basting either – just hate having to move all the furniture out of the way when I have to baste a bigger quilt 🙂
It looks fantastic….I love the longer pins – they go through all the layers so nicely!

love it, katie! and it looks like it’s a good size too! the pattern is on my list too. i’ll get to it eventually. is the carolina chambray a cotton/linen mix? what do you like about it?

It’s Carolina Chambray in natural. I love it in quilts because it has the look of linen with out the hassle of linen! It also adds some texture like linen. The other colors translate the texture better than the natural however.

That looks hard on the fingers. Grab a soup spoon. It makes picking up that sharp point and fastening it a LOT easier and quicker! Beautiful quilt!

That is a great looking quilt. I also do not like the pin basting bit and due to mobility issues can not get on the floor, so my dear husband does it for me, he is a great man.

Beautiful quilt top — great choice of solid! But isn’t all that pinning murder on your fingers? I use a nut pick to close them all — it’s got a good curve to fit the pins, and no sore fingers!

[…] I did whip up a few double sided flannel blankets.  I remember my Mom sending me a barrage of these until I thought she might have gone overboard.  Little did I know about pooping, spit up babies and the endless laundry.  I used every single one and now they are cut to bits and added to Roan’s quilt.
