Process is something I like to blog about anyway so I’m not sure if ‘cross my heart’ is really needed. My process is never the same, a continually revolving creative binge I guess.
It usually starts with a pile of fabric.
Something sharing process is just what I need to get me out of a funk. I had a bad experience lately due to sharing one of my ideas. I was so happy for this individual to turn it into a reality. However, the individual took full credit in front of me when asked how the idea originated…so please tread softly on what you see in anothers process and take credit only where credit is due. Otherwise it feels icky.
I often make small mock ups of what my idea might be. I encourage my students to do the same. A tweak here, trying a different value there can make all the difference. This was my original idea and I like it…but I don’t LOVE it. The chambray too dark and the solid green not big enough. It actually has been picked apart.
This one below I LOVE. The values are good and it’s got some potential pop! The small mock ups usually make it into a pillow or a baby quilt. The pile of scraps becomes a treasure too.
Plus it makes you feel so accomplished to just have some little bits done.
Sorry to hear about your negative experience. Don’t let it stick you in a funk too long…the way I see these things, is that you know it was your idea and so does the person who took credit for it. So you can be proud of yourself and your ability to share your creativity and ideas. The other person on the other hand knows that they are dishonest and untrustworthy…no one ever really feels good about themselves when that is who they are on the inside.
loving the new mock up…can’t wait to see the finished project.
what a butt! man… when are folks gonna stand up and start being proud of others and their accomplishments!! why do peeps have to be sooo catty??? i say what goes around, comes around and karma’s a b*tch!! 😉
plus… i think your a rock star and just started my first value quilt cause of YOUR ideas 🙂
xo, Heather
Sorry to hear about that Katie. I love hearing about your process, and I really do mean that I would very much like to take a class with you, because I think I would learn a lot and enjoy the process.
I owe you an email, crazy week. Hope you are good! xo
sorry someone did that to you, I’m sure it’s no fun.
I love the idea of sharing more about the process. That is truly why I started blogging, but I don’t do it as much as I would like. I am excited to read more about your process.
People who take credit for the ideas of others are not fooling anybody but themselves. Your work looks like your work.
Im excited to be reading more about process in general.
Hooray!
I like the idea behind the pledge, I can relate to it, have done so myself, and will keep doing it. You are an inspiration Katie, for sharing your process, and for you unique designs.
Sorry about your experiencing somebody else taking credit for your idea / design. I am afraid that’s not easy to avoid… On the other hand, if you have blogged about it, and your process, I think that’s pretty convincing documentation of origin.
I think sharing is the best way to keep growing. It makes you conscious of your choices. I’ll try to keep sharing, being inspired by others and giving credit when credit is due.
Some people just can’t seperate inspiration and intellectual copyright, even worse in your case that they decided to take full credit. Don’t let it keep you in a funk, I think these things always have a way of coming full circle 🙂
Love the process pledge idea, it’s so absorbing to find out the thinking that goes on behind the stitching, keep’em coming!
You know, I think that’s why a lot of bloggers went to showing finished products only… because people like to copy and then take credit. I know I’ve dealt with that in the past (in real life) and your right, it feels so icky!
I love what you’ve shared here and I hope people will be more conscious of the work that goes into creating something beautiful.
Jennifer 🙂
Mock-ups! That’s a damn good idea. I should do that more. And those orphan blocks can always find a home…
And that really sucks that someone essentially stole from you. Did you ever say anything to them?
humph. That’s all I say on that matter. 😉
Love the 2nd block too – those colours do pop really nicely. I love seeing your process – I like a trip inside your head.
(beer? I’ve just got a couple out – seems rude to drink them both myself)
sorry to hear about your bad experience with the copying!
I love those greens and blues together. Wish I lived closer so that I could take a class from you!
Re. your comment on my Blogger’s Quilt Festival quilt: My addiction for Amy Butler fabrics (especially the older lines) is especially strong right now. While I was giving away a charm set of her fabrics earlier this week, I bought even more of them on eBay. I’m obsessed with the earliest lines and may need professional help. There, I’ve admitted the problem. BUT — I don’t want to be cured!

Re. the process pledge. I didn’t “take the pledge” because I feel that I usually do write about the process. But — I may go back and do it anyway as a reminder.
LOL — sometimes I feel like I am all about the process and rarely show a finished product (the opposite of some of the prolific bloggers). I should take a pledge to finish quilts 🙂
