I can’t really call it a “quilt.” There’s no piecing and barely any quilting for that matter. It was my first attempt of the basics when Roan was just little and I know I love it more than he does. It also happens to be the softest flannel blankie ever and still is used when one needs a small soft spot to sit.
Barely quilted it still manages itself through the wash. I used a set of star shapes cookie cutters to mark the shape and quilted over the tracings. The stars are all different sizes.
I machine stitched the binding done. I’ve tried this several times and have concluded that I rather enjoy a movie, some couch time with my husband and the needle when it comes to the finale of the quilt.
Even with a lifetime of watching my Mother quilt, baby steps are needed to build skill and confidence. Do you still have your first quilt?
Cute. Those robots, adorable. It looks very soft and snugly.
I don’t have my first quilt anymore. I gave it away. Yep, my first attempt at quilting was a gift for someone else. Pretty naive, probably 😉 But it turned out ok and I think the receiver loved it.
actually i do – it was for my daughter – very simple blocks, some pics and others blank and hand quilted – its been much used and loved.

Thanks for sharing this – Isn’t it amazing how quickly we evolve as quilters? I don’t have my first, either. I gave away quite a few (amateur) quilts long before I started saving them.
I gave my first quilt to my mother, specially made in colors I knew she loved, thinking it would be nice to snuggle under while she read on the couch, or something… It lives in the dog bed! Honestly, the dog uses my very first, amazingly enough, well-crafted first quilt. I’m still upset.
I didn’t keep a quilt for myself until last year. My very first quilt was a patchwork from blue and yellow plaid homespun toweling. The backing was corduroy and the stitch-in-the-ditch quilting was bunchy. It was ugly, but the recipient loved it (or was too polite to tell me otherwise). I didn’t try again for ten years.
What a great idea to use your cookie cutters as stencils. I have tons lying around. I think gingerbread men might make a really cute quilting pattern
I’ve made four quilts in the last year and have yet to keep one for myself! My first one was a queen and a wedding present. I pretty much just dived right in and it turned out great! You can see it here: http://entredeuxbetweentwo.wordpress.com/2009/06/28/quilt-no-1-complete/
The only money I spent on it was the floral cotton on clearance and the batting. The rest I already had in my stash. It’s still my favorite quilt I’ve made, probably because while making it I realized how much I loved quilting!
Ahhh, sweet idea with the stars! Yes, I still have my first quilt.. it was made for me: http://stitchedincolor.wordpress.com/2010/05/22/colorbrick-for-bloggers-quilt-festival/
I just made my first, for my son. Kind of similar to your robots, it’s flannel but with fish. I love seeing him cuddle under it.
I really like the star quilting, and the idea of tracing a cookie cutter. I’ll remember that for my next few quilts!
Aw, thanks for sharing that. My first quilt was a gift for my nephew, but he still has it. A single Irish Chain with 2 fabrics.
I actually have my first quilt folded over the living room sofa; it’s on loan from uor daughter who is the rightful owner of the masterpiece.-) It’s almost 12 years now, but I still love the colours.
Yes, and it needs quite a bit of repair since it wasn’t put together so well. It’s also rather gaudy, so it doesn’t get much use.
