::Value Value::

August 30, 2010 By Katie

I received a note and some comments regarding the quilt hanging in this photo from my last Improvisational Workshop at Fabric Crush.  I call this half-square triangle design my “Seeing Value” design.  It hangs at Fabric Crush and is constructed entirely from the shop’s collection.

This was the first I ever constructed.  The half-square triangle was my first love  back when I was a quilting virgin.  Exploring value through this simple block certainly helped me absorb the importance  value has in creating a successful quilt design (not to mention align seams).  If it’s not intuitive to you what makes design work than you can learn through trial and error and some basic knowledge of value.  The hst block is a great mentor .  The painter learns by painting right?

So, being my first love…first, I did my “Seeing Value” tutorial, then I started teaching The Seeing Value class at The Quilting Loft (I’ve met a load of good people in this class!).

I’ve expanded my love of the hst to adding solids and thus a Half-Square Triangle Class at Fabric Crush.

You can certainly see the versatility of this block when it comes to design.

Half-Square Triangle Class date is Saturday October 9th from 11-4pm (Fabric Crush).

Seeing Value class date is Wednesday October 27th from 6-9 (The Quilting Loft).

I also have an Improvisational Workshop on Strip Piecing and a string block class coming up.  You can view the details here.

Have a good week everyone.

    Always an inspiration! I’m developing my teaching routine and I find I just want to teach exactly what you do! Don’t be mad, we live in different cities and I’m not copying. Of course, I’ve only taught improv to date.

      You Miss Noelle are quite the expert yourself now. Your zig zag is droolishous!

    Thanks for the reminder that I really, really, really want to do a values quilt. If only I could figure out how to do this with my charity quilting bee. If you have any tips do let me know! It seems like I’d really need to do most of the piecing myself…

    HST beats all other blocks hands down. I need to make myself another values quilt – love ’em!
