So it’s official, I’ve joined the Cult of Bernina and haven’t looked back. With a new machine comes relearning.
A few months ago I taught an invisible zipper class and as usual my students brought something to my attention that I didn’t know of, an invisible zipper foot.
Good old number 35.
This foot actually opens the zipper and lays it flat as you feed it through. Produces the best results ever. No ironing and no fuss.
However, I was stumped on how to feed it in from the start of the zipper tape and see where the teeth of the zipper were so I could start stitching. The visibility was crap.
It only took me four zippers to figure out a simple solution. Duh, mark the start with a dot like in the picture.
This way you can see through the zipper foot where to start.
It’s a piece of cake from there.

Wanna have some fun?
Have you ever checked out the BerninaUSA website? If you look under accessories-feet, they show all the different feet available and if you click on a particular one, they show a short video on how to use it. I’ve found it really helpful. But thanks, I didn’t even know they had one for the invisible zipper!
Thanks for the info. I usually go into Bernina NW and just have them help me, but no time yesterday.
Love love LOVE my bernina….wouldn’t own anything else for sewing. Glad you like yours! Love your posts..
Welcome to the club!? cult? Whatever. I truly love my nina’s – they are totally the best engineered machines out there IMO. And yes do check out their website, so much info in one spot. Enjoy!!
Only 4? That’s not so bad! ;o)
I became a Bernina follower this year too and I just love it. But – I am a huge zipper phobe. I just need to get out and take one of your classes someday!
I love, love, love my Bernina. I don’t have #35… I use #4 for zippers. I wonder what the big difference is… I may have to look that up.
I think one is for regular zippers and the #35 for invisible. You can use either, but it sure was easy.
that’s fantastic! I have a Janome … darn it anyway (I love my sewing machine tho). I got a foot recently that was the answer to my zipper prayers! it’s really skinny and works like a dream. I’ve been making lots of zipper pouches and never put a zipper in so easily!
Hi Katie,
I have been following your blog for a while and I am so inspired by you! Love all you have to share. I recently started my own blog and I have linked your blog to mine. I hope you’ll take a peak. Happy sewing!
Katie I have aslo realised that I’ll be going with a Bernina when I can afford it .
I used a friends older Bernina to do some applique , a task the Pfaff just couldn’t handle & was won over completely.
Can I ask which one you have gone with ?
Love that zipper technique , thanks for the mini tute .
I’m so jealous! I’m all the way in Florida, so I can’t take your class. 🙁 An online version, perhaps?:)
Hi Katie,
Thought this was such a great little idea that we posted a link to your blog on our McCall’s Patterns facebook page. Hope you’ll stop by to see it.
Kathy
I will Kathy. Thanks!
Thanks Kathy. I couldn’t find it though.
Wow, it’s fantastic!
Oh I had no idea there was an invisible zipper foot for the Bernina! Why did I not know this?? 🙂 I love my regular Bernina zipper foot, so I think I might have to pick up one of these as well 🙂
You will be blown away by how easy it is!
Thanks so much. The close up shots made everything so clear. I just learned
something new from you also. Marking where to start on both sides of the zipper tape was an awesome idea. Do I have a Bernina??? Maybe one day…:(
Hi Katie! Out of curiosity, which Bernina model did you get? I am a Bernina groupie too and keep upgrading as my skill level and the demand for making more quilts increases. I’m interested in finding a gently used 820 because of the larger quilting space as well as larger bobbin. Your input?
Michelle
Hi Michelle, I have a 430;)
