::Something Good::

December 12, 2010 By Katie

I don’t know what it is about me, but my whole life I’ve enjoyed things that have a process and an end product.  Whether it has been baking bread that started with building a fire in an oven or putting a binding on a quilt.  Those last few moments/stitches are precious.

Anyone else feel that satisfaction?

I completely understand this post…those last few stitches ARE really precious!

Yes, I love adding the binding too. I then enjoy holding up the quilt to our big mirror in the sitting room so I can see what the quilt looks like from a distance!

Few things are as supremely satisfying!

yes! I know that exact feeling. I sometimes s l o w right down too as the binding is almost done, just to eek the project out a little bit longer 😉

    YES! 😀

Sometimes I sprint to the finish, so I can start another one. Sometimes, it depends on the details. I used to make shirts for my husbands – dress ones, to wear to work. the fastest ever was three days from start to almost finish.

Sewing on the buttons? Two full weeks. 😉

But to take a pile of unassembled ingredients, and produce something useful, beautiful (and occasionally tasty with cooking) is something magical indeed. Being able to share it is awesome.

I completely agree. In fact, I would say that I am a person who has to produce something from all of my efforts. I’ve never been one to do sports or play games. I have to make things!

Completely understand. And I agree with Vicki. Maybe that’s why sports never appealed to me so much.

Yeah . . . . I like both the process and the finish. But if the process takes too long, I really want the finish to come sooner!

since I was a little girl ~ always amazed that you could take yarn and make something to wear and a flat piece of fabric and with a bit of work, make something to wear. that’s one reason I call my blog ‘a fine line’. you know, string, yarn, fabric … all a fine line at one time.

Binding is my favorite part of quilting. I don’t know if it’s the comfort of the quilt on my lap, the repetiveness of the stitching, or just the satisfaction of the finished product. I find it very calming and centering.

Hmmm, does this qualify? I love to finish a box, tube, or jar of something. Especially something that takes a long time. Things like toothpaste tubes, and ointment, or the last bit of jelly or salad dressing. But, I don’t know that I have felt that way about a sewing project. I’ll have to pay attention next one I finish.

Absolutely!!! I even don’t mind cleaning most of the time because you can see the product of your efforts so clearly. Though obviously making quilt is better! Same reason I think I enjoy home improvement and fix-it projects so much!

Definitely! Sometimes it feels like when a good book is about to end… you want to finish it but you don’t want it to be over.

I agree with Cara. I read a lot of books, mostly mysteries, but if they are good books, I never want them to end.

    Oh yes!
I remember having a career discussion with my father-in-law when I was struggling to find a ‘real job’. He asked how I liked to work and that is exactly what I said. And now I do, it only took 14 years to get there.

I felt that way the other night. I was putting some binding on a table runner and it went so well and I was so happy to be done and have that finished product! It made me want to do more small projects just to get to the finished part sooner! It’s a great feeling!

Absolutely! I like to take time with the finishing and dream about where my work will be in time. Will my granddaughter’s daughter use it just as I am now using quilts made by my own great grandmother?

what a wonderful thing to think about!

  18. Linda Urban says

I need both, too. I write kids books and as much as I enjoy the writing (okay, and sometimes hate it), I suspect that I wouldn’t write them if I didn’t know that at least some of them would be published. I need that finished product almost as much as I need to put the words on the page.

I’m only just learning to sew, but I loved every stitch of my first quilt — especially the hand-sewing the binding. it was like putting a bow on a well-chosen present.

The binding is one of my favorite parts…so much satisfaction in the neat, finishing touches.
