::Stockings::

December 20, 2010 By Katie

I’ve always LOVED my stocking.  Each one my Grandmother made her grandchildren was unique, with our names of course.  She was an talented knitter.

I love Santa’s nose, likely rosie from too much eggnog.  His fuzzy beard made of Angora and the sequins sewn into his tree as ornaments.  I like that he was preciously made with me in mind.

Roan has been so lucky to have a Great Grandmother craft a stocking especially for him as well.

Needlepoint this time.  His name and a puff ball adorns the bear’s hat.

Maybe next year we could all make some stockings that would make some children feel extra special.  I know my stocking always did that for me.

I’ve been searching a bit for some good stocking tutorials because my husband’s stocking got lost in the family shuffle over the years.

Please add if you know of another.

Happy Happy Everyone!

Ahhh! That’s my stocking too! I always get so excited when someone else has it. I believe it’s a Mary Maxim pattern from years back.

Our whole family has a set of those stockings and my daughter even got a new one specially made for her when she was one!

Have you seen Lizzy House’s new Peep Boots stocking pattern? http://lizzyhouse.typepad.com/lizzyhouse/2010/12/updating.html

I also really like Camille Roskelley’s new stocking pattern. http://camilleroskelley.typepad.com/simplify/2010/11/merry.html

I’m storing up all these great stocking ideas and planning to make a family set for next year – we’ll have a new family member by then!

Hi Katie! Happy Holidays! We have homemade stockings too really similar to yours. When Peter’s grandmother passed away several years ago, the family sent a package to me with a stocking she was knitting (needles still in it). I finished it and now it belongs to Ian.

See you in the new year!!

I, too, have that stocking, made for me by my grandmother. And the name across the top? Katie. So strange, yet strangely comforting to see it on your blog. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the blog comment. I would have my original stocking hanging up too, but my mom has an amazing sentimental attachment to mine and those of all my siblings. She still hangs them all up each year, even when we are aren’t there to celebrate with her. I’m happy to let her have it for the as long as she wants because I know that it makes her as happy as it makes me!

I have a stocking from my grandma that I take out every year and cuddle and just marvel at how creative and lovely it is. I have a tree skirt, too, that she crocheted about 15 years ago for me. It’s HUGE – more like an afghan, but I just love that I have these handmade treasures from my sweet, loving late grandmother. How special for you guys to have her handiwork at this time of year!

The stocking your grandmother knit you is so adorable. I especially love the tree. What a small world that others are recognizing it too. Yay for crafty goodness!

love your stocking! what a lovely Grandma you have. Having stockings wasn’t a family tradition when I was a kid, so I don’t have one … guess I’ll have to make one! I especially like the Scrap Stocking … better get with the sewing machine and make one up!

My mom made my family’s stockings when I was a kid and she still hangs them up every year. I love them so much! She just made another one (not pictured) for the newest grandchild.

Katie, we should do a Christmas in July stocking challenge with the SMQGuild and then maybe take them to Children’s or something! I know I will have leftover Christmas-y fabric after this year :o) Merry Christmas to you and your family!

My mother made those exact stockings for all her kids. She has since made on for my husband and my three kids. They love them because they stretch and “Santa” can put lots of goodies in them.
    Merry Christmas!

Oh my gosh, my great aunt made my whole family stockings like yours. Every one was different and I LOVED looking at them each year. I still have mine and I’ve always wished I could make similar ones for my husband and kids. It’s too bad that I don’t knit!

I have the same stocking too!

It must have been a popular knitting pattern for that generation!

Great site, I hopped over from Daisy Janie, we are doing a freebie together. 🙂
