::Zip It Up::

April 17, 2011 By Katie

This past week I’ve been working on getting samples done and Spring classes on the books.  I’ve made many a zip pouch and thought a class would be fun.

They make such great gifts that every sewist should know how to make a professional looking lined pouch.

I figured while I was at it, I would kill two birds with one stone and get the end of the year teacher gifts out of the way.

Last weekend digging through Kathy Mack’s scrap boxes at the Pink Chalk Studio I came up with the scraps to create these beauties!

The Lecien is a new favorite for sure and the trip to her studio inspired me to pull out the covered button bin.  Thanks Kathy!

Again, I dabbled in making Amy Butler’s Stash and Dash bags.  The pattern is just so finicky, or maybe it’s just me?

I actually took the large one apart and put it back together AGAIN before I was happy with it.  When using home decor they say, “no” to stabilizer, but I say, “yes.”

The set will go to my sister-in-law with Ethan and Ella’s quilts.

Off to sew.

i love your bags, too …. LOL …. i feel the same as you about amy butler patterns: i made a *birdy sling* and ended up making a re-do of the entire pattern … not to sell or anything like that, but to make it work … the *birdy sling,* in particular, had pattern changes and unless you are online and savvy enough to check her site, you cannot make it work …. the directions are so stupefying, i can’t imagine how new sewists can do this …. ok, my rant is over …..

i love your blog and all your wonderful ideas … wish i lived closer to seattle area so i could take your classes — yakima/selah just does not cut it …..

    what stabilizer do you use?

I actually hate stabilizer. The final product always feels weird to me so I use a light duck cloth or canvas.

Agree on the stash ‘n dash bags. The zipper installation with the topstitching is super finicky. I made all three sizes for a gift and did each one a different way. Didn’t like any method I tried!

I like mine now, but just “ok.”

I have never made the stash and dash bags, but made one of the Origami pouches from Amy Butler’s newest book, and that pattern to me seemed very finicky as well with the zipper installation. I was not 100% happy with how it turned out, and decided that next time I am going to try a different method for installing the zipper …

My other zippers always work so I don’t know what the deal is.

Oh, I’m disappointed! I’ve always liked the Stash and Dash bags and have been wanting to buy the pattern and make some. Any tips you can offer?

be perfect or use quilting cotton and the stabilizer they recommend. I used canvas like I always do in pouches and it was a pain.

I spotted that Lecien and had to comment–I’ve had my eye on it ever since it came out. It’s beautiful as a zippered bag and I love the little button details~ thanks for sharing!

thank you so much … that was so weird; replying to a post from a few years ago … but i needed to know b/c stabilizer is so *hard* and it’s not *bag-like* enough for me … hope this makes sense ….

        again, thank you ….
