::Whole Cloth Quilt and Quilt Finishing Class::

April 22, 2011 By Katie

I’ve had this simple quilt sandwich basted and rolled up waiting for its addition of scraps and stitchin’ to make it into a ticker tape.  I got to thinking about our limited basting space in the class room and that a simple, modern AND most importantly small quilt could do the trick for teaching the basic threes to quilt finishing.

Stuff Three’s:

  • Quilt Top
  • Batting
  • Quilt Back

Do Three’s:

  • Baste
  • Quilt
  • Bind

The end result, this modern baby quilt!  We’ll cover the three’s in the class, and discuss what straight stitched quilting design to execute, plus centering and squaring a quilt and troubleshooting.

The design of the stitching is really seen from the solid front.  I think this is Kona Pond.  I straight stitched some gentle curves and left a space to straight stitch a third in.  I added a few lines of red.

It’s bound in one of my favorite Cake Rock Beach dots.

And the backing is one of my stockpiled Alexander Henry Raindrop Stripe.

I think it will be a super fun class.

I’ve got Add Zip To Your Pillow class next Thursday if you need some new Spring flare.  I have my fabric all picked out.

I like the little bit of red in your quilting. It adds personality. 🙂

Ok, that’s smart. Will be a great class! I could totally benefit from playing with quilting on a solid on a small scale like that. Hmm…. Why do you live so far away?

I’ve never made a ticker tape quilt but it has been something I’ve given a good think to lately. It helps to see that you have the background already sewn and bound. I just may have to give it a go! Does any size work or is it a personal choice. Darn, now I’m feeling inspired and it’s too late to go sew! I have scraps out my ying yang and this would help me clean them up – maybe!

I believe for a traditional ticker tape you quilt as you sew the scraps down. I think doing a mixture would be fun!

I love the red stitching you added! This shows off the quilting so well… looks great.

Looks great, Katie! I really like the use of a single fabric for both the front and the back. It accentuates both the fabric and the quilting.

That red dot looks a lot like Rainy Days and Mondays by Melimba and Beccabury for Riley Blake Fabrics.

I agree and I have some of that too. This one is Cake Rock Beach.

Hi Kate – Wondering if you had to have a long arm sewing machine to make this quilt?!? I am trying to get inspired for my first quilt and want to give something similar to this a try. LOVE IT!

No, I just used my walking foot on my home machine for this. Super easy starter quilt. Good luck.
