May 18, 2011 By Katie

I wanted to diverge from the traditional half square triangle with one solid and one print for my half square triangle class.

Ara Jane  came along to guild with her hst quilt and I was hooked.

On my last trip to the island I stacked some bolts at Pink Chalk Fabrics.  Most are Kona with one shot cotton thrown in.  Purples, teal, light blue, light green, gray and white.  They play off one another perfectly.

If you are in the market for solids, Kathy Mack is my one stop shop.

I also scored this Lush for backing at half off.

After consulting my quilting expert (hee hee) I have a quilting plan.

I mopped and scheduled in some back/knee injury time,

also known as basting.

After removing the table from the kitchen for the process I’m also realizing that I need to schedule some repaint the baseboards and sew new curtains to replace those that are beyond faded.

One task will go on the honey-do list and the other will give me an excuse to buy fabric.

I hope I love the quilting as much as I adore the top!

In your first picture, there is something lovely on the couch in dark and light grey… is that a pillow or a quilt? Do you have more pictures, I love what I can see of the pattern.

Not sure if my response went through. It is soon to be a quilt for my husband, but happily lives as a pillow for now:

WOW. It is so perfect it doesn’t look real! hehehe. Not a seam out of place. Nice. I love the backing you chose too. Can’t wait to see the quilting. Your kitchen floor must get cleaned alot. Maybe I should baste my quilts on the floor too, then I would have to clean them! 🙂

Beautiful! I love reading this. I must confess, this new language you speak can be confusing. But I focus on the pretty pictures.

By the way, can I make a quilt out of old t-shirts? Too loose? What do you think? And when I say “can I make” that really translates into “when I hire someone, is it possible they can…”

    Toodles! Michele

You can, but I think you use a stabilizer to keep them from stretching. I’ve never done it though. Good luck!

oh wow, this is just amazing! i just can’t get enough of this random hst layout. it’s so fun to let your eyes wander through all the patterns created. and your colors are perfect! i’m still stumped as to how to go about quilting mine, but i really love your plan. is that going to be solid, or random sections of tightly spaced lines?

Going to draw it out today and I’ll let you know. Hoping to cross some to form triangles.

This layout gave me some many other design ideas. I’ve got leftovers to play with.

It’s awesome, Katie. It looks almost fake, it’s so perfect. That’s one thing that I love/hate about solids … there’s no cheating or room for errors. Great work!

Not quite sure, but here’s a few I think I know: white, med. grey, mulberry (I think), some shot cotton in purple with a teal weave, olive (I think), aqua and maybe teal blue. Good luck!

Aww, I love that your dad comments in the comments section. <3

Your quilt is so flat and lovely laid out on the floor there! I feel like I can never get mine laid out flat enough. I can't wait to see it all quilted up. I love me some HST's! When you laid them all out did you just do it randomly? I love it!
