::Mission Thread::

May 20, 2011 By Katie

Today while the sun shines I’ll quilt the HST Love quilt.  I think I’m going with straight horizontal lines, everything else seemed too much for the design.

I darted over to Bernina NW yesterday to get some light gray/purple quilting thread.

Bernina NW’s new space (right next door to the old in Northgate) is crisp and clean like their old space, but airy and larger.  My jaw must have been on the ground.

When I went to purchase my thread Glorianne made me an offer I couldn’t refuse for the whole box of Mettler quilting weight thread.

I almost peed my pants and actually was having one of those moments on the car ride home where you hope every light is red.  I just wanted to gaze at it all.

I cracked up after yesterday’s post that it is now all organized and contained.

I don’t think I would actually quilt a regular quilt with some of the less neutral colors, so I’m going to have to come up with some free motion ideas that purely makes up the quilt, no piecing required.  Maybe more 3’s the Magic Number Quilts.

Any ideas?

And speaking of thread, the new rave after Market is this Auriful thread that is suppose to make piecing heavenly.  It sure is silky and light.  I had to try it.  Bernina NW had a million colors.

Stay posted on that one.

That is a truly ridiculous amount of thread!! Aurifil is so nice – I started using it recently and I prefer it to everything else I’ve tried. It’s even better for quilting than the Mettler thread I’ve used. Hope you enjoy it too!

    Oh. My. Gosh.

Were they clearing out the thread? Why doesn’t my LQS owner ever make me awesome offers like that??? 😉

    I’m drooling on my keyboard.

I’ve been using that Aurifil for piecing for a year or two. It is quite nice and less bulky.

I couldn’t believe how silky it is.

I’ve been using Aurifil for about six months. Love it! Less breakage and less lint.

That’s what I’m hoping because I get lazy with the cleaning.

Lovely pics! Someday I hope the thread fairy visits me and I get BURIED. Until then, my Mother’s Day gift was actually 5 large spools of neutral thread. Yeah, my husband….

Why are pictures of thread so glorious? wow! So I’m anxious to hear your assessment of the Aurifil after you use it. I’m using Superior, which is expensive enough in my opinion, and Aurifil costs even more. So I’d love to know if the added expense is justifiable.

I love Aurifil for piecing, but not the black. I love Superior threads, esp. the black Masterpiece. My longarm loves them both. I buy it by the ginormous cone, which is a special order item, but worth it. You got a great deal. What about fancy quilting on solids? Crazy quilt?

Oh your a lucky duck getting all those threads! Enjoy! Btw how do you decide what quilting lines/pattern will work with which design? I find it difficult visualising quilting for a quilt and am sometimes disappointed after when I’ve gone ahead with a quilting design. Any advice?

A friend introduced me to Aurifil about two years ago – I bought a couple of spools and have never looked back. The Mako 50 weight is my go-to thread for machine and hand piecing both, and I’m experimenting with some of the heavier threads for hand quilting. Good stuff. And I’m thrilled that Bernina Northwest is carrying it — used to have to trek to Quiltworks Northwest in Bellevue or order it on line. Yay!

Love, love, love the Aurifil. It’s the only thread I’ve used for piecing the last two or three years. And the rest of your booty?

    I got a little light-headed.

I had to try Aurifil after Market in Houston, and I’ve got to say that I really liked it. The seams had less bulk and it made them a truer 1/4″. And less bulky. And the 100% cotton thread didn’t break like I expected it to.

    I love that quilt!

That’s some serious thread to drool over! I’ve got a neutral solid top basted and ready for the onslaught of coloured quilting!

awesome, can’t wait to see your idea. I’d do a bunch of different colored quilting, but the bobbin thing would drive me crazy.

The lady at my LQS only sells Aurifil thread and swears by it. I used one of their variegated threads to quilt one of my quilts a while back and it looked beautiful.

I’m looking forward to trying it, the reviews are good.

That box of thread must have been fun to sort out! I’ve been using aurifil for years…I’m happy with it. I used gutermann before that, and the aurifil is less linty. Besides the occasional mettler, that’s about the extent of my thread adventures… 🙂
