I messed with Half Rectangles today, or at least that’s what I call them.
Has anyone else played with these?
Tucking them aside, but will play more later. They do weird things.
I made some progress on Anything Goes. The pictures are not good and I’m at a standstill.
When I stall out on the direction of an improvisational quilt design my general default solution is too make more blocks. However, this involves buying more linen, so I might stick with the original design option above.
That sounds like I’m unsatisfied with it, but I’m not. It’s that large neutral space. I have to let it sink in my brain that the right quilting can transform that space into part of the overall design. I know it will be simple quilting, but beyond that I’m lost.
Or I could just throw the fabric budget to the wind and start going in another direction with more blocks. But wait, I already threw the budget to the wind…
Sewing with a friend tomorrow, and if I’ve learn anything from my collaboration with Jacquie, it has been that sometimes you need a new set of eyes to see the vision clearly.
I embrace that.
I’m trying hard to stick to my list of unfinished projects, but I’m really itchin’ to ditch it all.
I have a pile up of ideas and am in the mood for a sunny, picnic sort of Summer Love Quilt.
Oh, I think it already has a name.

For your improv quilt, I’d suggest you either use a contrasting (purple) thread for quilting… Alternatively, you can improv piece the large negative space with the linen combined with some purple solid from the blocks… I know I’m an amateur to tell someone like you who has a lot of experience, but I just loved that quilt and could not resist… 🙂
Cheers from India
All suggestions welcome.
Ack! Those half square rectangle blocks are amazing. I had never thought to do anything like that. Love them.
Your anything goes quilt is looking great too. I hope your sewing buddy can help you figure out where to go, if you need to do anything at all. My thought would only be to add some sort of something with the large expanse of linen to balance things a bit? But like you said, the right quilting can definitely take the place of fabric.
It does need some balance and maybe some fabric purchasing.
I’ve played with them in my head… does that count.. 🙂
*gasp* half square rectangles!?!?! be-still my beating heart – what a fantastic thing! i know what i’ll be playing with next!
HSR–never seen, but i like them! lovely colors on this one!
I love the half square rectangles! I really hope you share a little more about those. My Christmas prints have been sitting in a pile for a year waiting for me to decide on the perfect pattern and I think the rectangles might be it 🙂 I can’t wait to see what you decide to do with them.
loving those half rectangles and the colors too!
HSR=Math. I love math.
Improv: Tip your head (or your blocks). It’s so strongly horizontal it emphasizes the negative space below. If you run the purple vertically, I think it’ll balance better and still leave you lots of room to highlight the quilting.
Oh your pile is very fun looking!
I’ve played with rectangle like that (on my Key Lime Pie quilt). I like your pieced effect.
Not sure if you’re asking for two cents, or even a penny on the Anything Goes project, but here it is. It isn’t so much the empty space to me, it’s having all the purple at the top.
Good advice, I actually worked on adding the purple down too. The purple was needed to set off the strip piecing.
I was struck by all the negative space too. I wonder what it would look like with the purple blocks re-arranged some. I’d put a purple lock in the upper right (as you’re looking at it) corner, then have the remaining purple blocks move at a diagonal from the green block with the purple frame inside. It seems like that’s the block that’s most balanced with the two colors and would be a good pivot point.
excellent. moving them around some.
I’m curious to see what you do with this. Thanks for sharing your design process. And I’d never seen half rectangles before 😉
