::Enter Scrappy Sunshine::

August 16, 2011 By Katie

It’s been an odd summer here in the Pacific Northwest.  I thought it time to produce some of my own sunshine.

Enter Scrappy Sunshine Quilt.

This quilt originally started with cutting up all my Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt.  It just needed to happen, but when I put it up to create blocks, it was just bland.

Well you know what they say about best laid plans…

I pulled the duller colors and threw in the Amy Butler Lotus (thanks Heather for the pink!),

and then the Alexander Henry Aviary which I always wanted to have together with the Lotus in a quilt.

The Heather Ross campers were an afterthought and I had just enough for a few blocks, so perfect for a summery quilt.

I think I bought Pink Chalk out of these little Japanese flowers in every color way when they went on sale.  They are printed on the same soft fabric as Heather Ross’s stuff.

Of course I can never make a quilt purely from stash so I ordered this print in each colorway when I found it for $5/yard.

It all makes the Flea Market Fancy seem like an afterthought.

The layout doesn’t have any rhyme or reason.  I just grab blocks from the piles and lay them on my cutting mat in a square or rectangle and piece them.

And look what decided to make an appearance this morning.

Hello Sunshine!

I love that the sun came out for you! I guess it heard your call…..
This will be a lovely quilt! I’m in LOVE with that orange, and of course the HR campers– too cute!!!

Very fun! And I’m feeling your pain about the sunshine – wow, it’s been a dismal summer!

Oh, I really, really like this! I love the organized look of all different sizes fitting together along with so many prints used together. I’ve been itching to make something like this, I just didn’t have a clear picture of what “it” was until now. 🙂

Love the quilt! We’ve had way too much sunshine in Texas this summer – will gladly send you some 🙂

I’m curious about your reference to “magic numbers” – can you tell me what that is?

I love how it came out and how your original plan morphed over time. I agree about the sunshine – the last few gray mornings were rough!

This is just beautiful! I would love to make one like this! What size squares did you use? Looks like your smallest is 2.5 and your largest is 6.5? Love this, just gorgeous!

I’ve been thinking of this type of design for my Joel Dewberry Aviary (which I just haven’t had time to cut into yet!) I love the randomness of it all, but it has order too. Yours looks so fun and bright!

You hit it out of the park! I love the randomness here, but the orderly squared off edges. I’m clueless about magic numbers, so off to visit that link now…

Yes, the orange is fabulous!! The funniest sentence: “It all makes the Flea Market Fancy seem like an afterthought.” It made me laugh even though I have spent a chunk of change on FMF!

I think I bought mine on sale I’ve had it so long. Funny though, once I cut it up I really didn’t care so much.

It has been an odd summer here in Portland too. Cold one day and the next hot as heck.
Love this scrappy sunshine quilt ~ orange, being one of my favorite colors, seems to be a feature in it.
Looks like we’ll be having more sun and warm weather for the next week or so. Happy days!

Holy delightfulness! I’m in love. What a fun quilt and such a good reason to cut into beloved fabrics.
I’m with you–I can sit and stare at and pet a pile of pretty, new fabric, hating to cut into it. But as soon as I do, the intimidating barrier is gone and it’s just great fabric that I have no trouble messing with.
Can’t wait to see this quilted.

Love the colours in this, it’s definitely summery. Think I’ll have to read more about them there magic numbers though, it sounds like it’s going to appeal to the maths degree geek in me ;o)

Wonderful! I just love it, and it made my day to see what you did with the AB pink. That is what fabric is truly for, isn’t it?To be used and not hoarded. I have far too much unused. I agree… all FMF would have been boring. Way to go! Also… on a selfish note… I emailed you a quilt question today, if you get a chance to throw an opinion my way. I’m stymied. Don’t know why, but I can’t seem to move forward with my current project. Thought maybe some good advice would get me going!

The quilt is fab and thank you for the link to the magic numbers info, but the thing that took my breath away most is that viking ship! I grew up with that in my home, and it’s still at my parents’ house, in Seattle, too. It’s like coming across an old friend online.
