We call my husband’s grandma Goobin, the details are fuzzy as to why.
But every year I make her a zip pouch for her ciggies. I save a few sample blocks for this purpose. This block is a cast-off from a quilt somewhat in production mode.
The story this year is a little sad and a whole lot funny.
You see, I always include a strap to attach the pouch to her walker, like this one last year.
Well, with old age we forget things and apparently Grandma Goobin has forgotten she smokes! So I guess not all is downhill when it comes to losing our memory after all.
So this year I didn’t add a strap. She can leave this in her room, no need to venture outside for a puff.
This pouch from last year is still my favorite ever, though for the smell it likely should be burned.
Wishing my Bernina had this triple stitch, possibly the only redeeming characteristic of the Pfaff that I practically lost my own mind using.
So, that’s one checked off the list.
How are you getting on with gifts? My list is short this year for lack of time.
hey! your pictures are snowing! awesome! no wait… it is your page! this is so fun! how did you do it?
i love the pouches, i have always said as long as i am pleasantly confused i will be happy to loose my memory when i get old.
The snow is just a button on my blog. It is fun and I like your attitude.
Wait, my Pfaff has a stitch like that?!? I will need to look tonight!!
The pouch is super cool! I’ve been around assisted living a lot in my life, but never seen someone forget that they were a smoker. That’s a pretty good thing to forget, as far as those things go.
That’s a gorgeous pouch, Katie. Yeah, it’s snowing!
Your Bernina doesn’t have a triple stitch? Mine looks like three dotted lines with a zig zag line next to it. …
What?! Gotta check that out.
That’s so hilarious and awesome that she forgot that she smokes! Her new non-smoking pouch is fabulous. 😀
Well, I guess it’s never too late to give up! Still, the pouch is cute, whatever she decides to use it for :o)
Cute pouch!
You are unique to get her something for her smokes. I always used to say that the best gift for my Dad would have been a carton of smokes and a 2-6 of rum. That’s what he enjoyed the most, after all! But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. (We did bury him with smokes and rum though.)
Cute pouch – my mum had me make plastic canvas ciggie holders that had a space for her lighter… But the last one was years ago.
I’m ahead on my gifts this year but I’m hoping that means I can finish early and not be up until breakfast the day before Christmas.
PS. Is your blog snowing? Sweet. 🙂
Love this year’s pouch! Is that Heath lining? I like it!
Katie, come use my Bernina, it has the triple stitch 🙂 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you did with the block.
This pouch is awesome! love the colours and the piecing!
And what a fun story! I wish I would forget that I like candy 😉

Love the pouch, I’m halfway through my handmade Christmas list and regretting not starting sooner like I always wish I had.
Great pouch and the design is wonderful. I love the story about Grandma Goobin ~ sometimes forgetting is not so bad.
I wonder if my Janome has that triple stitch? I’ll have to check it out.
Okay, that’s just crazy cool. I’d hate you if I didn’t love you.
Please tell me you found your triple stitch (it’s one of the stretch stitches). Then you can detest everything about the Pfaff-from-hell.
haven’t had a moment to look. see you Friday! P-A-R-T-Y!
I lvoe thte two pouches… Great design!
So lovely to see this year’s gift for her. I’m afraid that working and kids in elementary has changed my life. It’s all good though. Not mutch blogging going on, but we’re still the same around here in many ways. there will be a few less handmade gifts this year and that’s ok. So excited to see your book out. Congrats!!!!!! A fat guy in a suit is gracing me with a looksie at it…. already on order. xoxo
I hear you on the blogging thing and work. Somethings got to give. I’m just trying to fit in the sewing time to stay sane. Happy Holidays to you! xo
I just love both last year’s and this year’s pouches. And what excellent news that Grandma has given up the smokes! I must say, I loved my grandmothers so much, but going in for a kissy hug was so gross when I was a kid. I was very happy when they both quit in their 60’s (and went on to live to 88, both of them!).
I am interested in your Pfaff experience. I’ve got the Quilt Expression 4.0 and it took me a LONG time to figure a lot of stuff out, especially FMQing. Have you found your Bernina triple stitch? I’m sure you’ve got one.
I didn’t fmq with my pfaff 2.0 ever and this might have worked fine. When using the walking foot there was no foot pressure adjustment and it would just push all the fabric, such a drag…literally.
yeah you do have that stitch on your bernina! can’t quite see whether it is the aurora 430 or 440 that you’ve got there in your photos, but on the 430 it is stitch number 128. (on the aurora 440 the stitch numbers are different)
anyhoo, get out that dinky little plastic stitch card (to this day I can’t BELIEVE bernina did that as a stitch reference) and attach it to the handle at the top of the machine – mine lives there permanently to remind me of all the great stitches I can tinker with!
you can play with the triple stitch width, length (and thread weight) to get different looks, from bead like to beautifully parallel.
the pouch is fab, well done and one happy grandma 🙂
I’ve got that card! Thanks for the tip and as soon I climb out of my project pile I’ll do another pouch with it.
