::Third Time’s the Charm::

December 16, 2011 By Katie

Anything Goes is finally a finished quilt top.

I actually might have cut this puppy apart 4 times, but I am officially happy with the layout.  With all the traditional work I’ve been doing lately it felt good to flex the brain with some improvisational quilt design last Sunday.

It’s impossible to photograph, the purple chambray really is lovely with the linen and print.

I think I’ll add a few inches to the right to widen it.  Now onto the hard bit, how the heck do I quilt it?

All the hollowed out log cabins need light colored stitching to make them more present and then there’s all that background space.

I’m thinking of a free motion combo.

Some flowing shape in the squares and graphic squares/rectangles perhaps in the background.

I’ll let it hang for a bit, the floor desperately needs a cleaning anyway before any basting can happen.

    Great colours and I like the close ups so I can see the separate blocks – it’s interesting to see how it is put together.

    This is so pretty with your sophisticated color combo and unique design. I love your name for it but think not anything goes would work as well. (4th try indicates a real dedication to your idea, not giving in before you are truly happy)
    The layer of texture will add another dimension. Maybe you could test out the quilting design on a pillow or two?
    Thank you for sharing your process and progress. Very inspiring!

    Nice. It is really balanced now.
    How about nothing but floating, overlapping squares in various sizes. It would mean a lot of stops and starts, but it would also echo the pattern really well.

      I was thinking that for the background. Really want something different in the empty parts of the squares/rectangles. Suggestions?

      That type of design is what I had in mind. I think I saw it on Alisa’s blog a while ago. Thanks for the tip. Still thinking of doing something different in the blocks.

    Hi Katie, I like this quilt alot and am enjoying wandering through your other posts as well… Wonder if your book will be available in the UK too? I have never made a quilt myself but while I was studying textiles I went to the V&A exhibition on Quilts in London, which was a revelation to me, I absolutely loved it. Your quilts would not have been out of place in that show! I am going to start following your blog so I can see more of your great colours and stitchwork, it’s very inspiring.
