I love orange and purple, but can’t say the rest of Pantone’s spring colors appealed to me.
I have a hard time working with colors I don’t like…or doing anything I don’t like or want to do for that matter, so I stacked some bolts on the counter at the Quilting Loft and kept changing them out until I found a color story that worked for me.
Seattle is not kind on light this time of year. So I want you to know that the dark purple is a bit lighter than pictured.
I love it when I look at my design wall and like what’s there. I even generally will smile to myself. Who wouldn’t?
The half-square quilt design is not new (and certainly not original to me), but simply a redo of my HST Love. It is pretty fun to mess about with different colorways. I love the punch that this colorway creates.
The fabrics are:
granite ( I think this is the name), prune and tangerine shot cottons ( I love these shot cottons, but think they are a pain in the ass to iron after they have been washed)
the pomegranate color is Moda cross weave # 38
Kona solids in baby blue, white and petunia
This Amy Butler print would never have caught my eye, but when I started pulling fabrics for backing it spoke to me. P-E-R-F-E-C-T.
After its time as a class sample for my Seeing Value class it will be a long overdue wedding gift to some dear friends of mine.
Hoping you are all having a good week. From the media hype, Seattle is suppose to be blanketed in snow by 3am. But I might eat this quilt before I believe it.
Bring it on, I’d be happy enough to be snowed in for two weeks or more provided I have power to my sewing machine.
Beautiful and very unique colors….love it! Enjoy the snow! We got our first snow yesterday….kind of silly to be without it here in new england in jan. I know you will create wonders while the white stuff comes down
Very, very beautiful…
Wow. Great colour combinations.
It’s beautiful with a strong personality. I think it’s an equal partner to the one in your header. One is masculine to me, one feminine. Fascinating to see what the change in color scheme does to a pattern. I am in love with both of these!
I love this, great job!
I LOVE it! What a beauty. I would love to learn how to be more precise and match up my points like you do. Hope you get snow. Unfortunately – we are in no danger of any here in VA!
What great color choices! Anxious to see how you quilt this top. And from what I can see in the photo, the kleenex box seems to be good quilt inspiration too! LOL
Gorgeous! You know I’m a sucker for a good HST quilt 🙂
I love them too.
Love it, Katie. What size are those hsq’s?
Thanks. I start with 6.5″ squares and cut them down to 6″ when pieced.
6″.
Love it, the colors are great, love the pattern too.
Love your palette and that the solids are in a variety of fabrics. And great backing – agreed.
This is phenomenally stunning! Those colors are so right on. You’ve done it again!! I definitely need to start playing around more with HSTs!!!
beautiful! The colors are wonderful … thanks for listing the fabrics out…
my oh my… love this…..the colours really sing!
That was exactly the eye candy I needed this morning! Gorgeous and such lovely mix of traditional and modern. Love it.
oh wow!!!!! it’s just beautiful, your hst’s are perfect!!!! and that backing couldn’t be a better match. 🙂
Gorgeous! I really love it!
Have you started to eat your quilt yet?
It’s beautiful Katie! I was just looking at Marimekko fabric and this reminds me of it.
Beautiful quilt. I also love purple and orange together. I could spend all day in a fabric store playing with all the different fabric. Have a great week.
Oh, I love this one even more than the cooler colored version. If we weren’t snowed in, I would be at TQL right now picking up some shot cotton!!
Now, how will you quilt it? 🙂
I love that combination of colors too. I simply have to do a HST quilt
How do you go about arranging the layout? Do you have equal numbers of all the different color combinations? I just love this quilt and the previous one.
That’s absolutely gorgeous! I’m curious: do you sew together a whole bunch of HSTs first and then lay it out, sketch out the colored layout beforehand, or cut a bunch of triangles out and play with them on your design wall?
Ok… Iove this! I thought I was done with HST’s for awhile, but now you’ve got me itching to play with some solids! Thanks for the inspiration!
Wow it’s a beautiful combination of colors! Very nice. I’m looking at your Kleenex box too, thinking it would make a nice quilt 🙂
Gorgeous color palette! Very original. I’m inspired to dig out my solids.
you are killing me here! i l o v e it!
The quilt top looks fab, but can I just say that I love that you have a patchwork style tissue box too?!
Wowee, that seems quick! Lovely work, Katie and great colors. That backing is totally made for this quilt. It’ll be nice to put something so organic/floral on the back of this graphic look. Enjoy the finishing!
fabulous colors!! another gorgeous HST quilt – I have been in love with your earlier HST quilt for so long and now I have a second love! I would love to see how you lay this out – all random, or is there some thought to the layout?
Just so lovely. Is there something like this in your book? Then I have even more to look forward to when its out. Must try this after I finish the all the WIPs I’ve been trying to do.
I love it!
how’d that quilt taste?
Love it!
I’m a baby quilter (I have only finished one simple square lap quilt and a speedy Jellyroll quilt, but I am playing around with other quilts at the moment), but this looks like something maybe I could try my hand at. I need to up my cutting accuracy, but my sewing skills are good (thank you fashion school). I am just delighted to see such an awesome quilt that I can actually maybe attain my own version of in the next year!
Very nice indeed. I’ve never done a totally solid quilt but this just might inspire me to do one. After I get all the other projects in the works done first of course. And the backing is absolutely perfect!
I would probably never pick that color scheme on my own but I LOVE IT! You should be proud.
Gorgeous! I hear you on the crapola PNW light at this time of year!
One of my favorite color combos! There’s something sinful about purple and reds together!!
Congrats on being FP! This quilt turned out soooo striking. Thank you.
Love the quilt!
i like mixes of blues and oranges. like a sea foam and peach. also navy and terra cotta. or, think early morning sun with a dark blue fading away and a peach/orange sky approaching.
Nice quilt. My own place could use that kind of style.
beautiful! i love handmade quilts. our neighbor makes them and has given us a few as gifts. lucky us!
Gorg! The pattern looks like a work of modern art!
I love color and triangles and this quilt has them both! What a day it’s going to be!
Great post.
The Lioness
I wish I had your skills! Nice work!
i think purple against orange is very naturally pretty… once i saw a photo taken at the sunset… the orange light from the drowning sun was casted on a shadow-ed purple wall 🙂
Truly beautiful work! My mom has been creating quilts for all of her grandchildren and children. She’s almost done and would love to see all the creative ideas on your site.
lucky, lucky friends to get such a marvelous wedding present.
Sharing your site with some quilting friends. Check out my home page at http://aprilhawk.wordpress.com….read That’s Our Story…..it is about the barn quilt I had made last fall.
These are absolutely beautiful. Everyone can’t sew, but your work is wonderful. Keep it up.
Hi, I left Seattle in 2007 and I don’t recall a lot of quilting or quilters in Seattle at that time. When I moved to Skagit, I wrote an article on quilting in that region and the quilt festival that takes place in Anacortes around the Skagit Tulip Festival.
I like your quilts. The lighting isn’t any better in Bellingham than Seattle this time of year–grays, whites, and greens.
I really like the boldness of your designs.
Really cool colors and so beautiful to look at. Great work. You’re very talented.

Excellent colors! Fearless, but they all rhyme.
Its curious, your quilt and my company’s logo (VMware) looks a LOT alike. The logo is greens and blues, but the same squares and triangles A very appealing pattern!
Beautiful choice of colours – the pale blue works perfectly with the rest, great contrast! I love-love Pantone as well, they’ve got a great bunch of products – a few Pantone Christmas presents this year!
Thank you for sharing!
lovely
Gorgeous, graphic quilt!
Love the design and the colors, plus it reminds me of my friend’s father’s paintings. She has one hanging in her apartment, and it looks like this quilt but in shades of yellow, green and blue.
Nice quilts. I love the colors in the shot in your header.
The more exotic the quilt and the more celver the quilt design the better it is to dream under. My quilt only gets used in the winter when the nights are darker and longer. I could probably quaterback the Superbowl winning team under that one. Sew on. Delighted to have seen your work.
Personally, I found myself pretty impressed with your quilt. It is beautiful, and obviously the work of someone who is very skilled. However, I had to write and share my girlfriend’s reaction, which after the squeal of delight then involved taking my computer from me, scrolling, asking me if the quilt was for sale, and then talking about how we could decorate our new place in a few months with a quilt like that.
So, on behalf of both of us, thanks so much for sharing, and good luck surviving the snow in Seattle. Here in New York City, we got a bit this weekend, but it is all pretty much gone now. Take care!
Wow! Love the modern twist to quilting! You’re making them cool again! Beautiful colors!
Those are great!
It’s gorgeous, Katie!
wow! very beautiful photographs with vivid colours.nice work
TechSmartLife
wow!
Love the colors! I recently blogged about the new Pantone color of year – tangerine tango – so your post caught my eye!
(and did you get snowed in? I certainly got stuck on my hill in Seattle, though I also did not believe the snow was coming!!)
LOVE the colours- gives it a very modern feel! You are very talented!
Wow, beautiful. My mother in law does similar stuff but she never uses such vibrant colours 🙂 Stunning.
nice…
Really stunning.
James
love it cause its beautiful … hate it cause it makes me want to be at home instead of work .. lol … love the colors !!!!
Hy Katie,
Great work!
maybe you should come to Rio de Janeiro to make some street art with us…
check out my work and lets talk about it, ok?
cheers, João.

awesome! good job. My oldest daughter is learning to quilt.
Fantastic quilt! I love the purple and orange together, isn’t it nice when you’re inspired, as you say, by a color story? Also, and this probably isn’t a big deal since you seem like a professional sewer, but I cannot get over how straight your seams are! As someone who has probably 2 hours experience in sewing (made a tutu for Halloween), I appreciate your craftsmanship, can’t wait to see more of your stuff!
Very dynamic and graphic! And congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
I was forced to start a wordpress for a college class, but I can honestly say I am glad I did, because now I have found your blog!
This quilt and your color choices are stunning1
Was it difficult to learn to quilt/sew? I am envious.
I love that you added the blue. Just love that.
I’m making a purple back right now for an orange top. It just seemed right.
Very nice.
Beautiful
The design roll at the top of the wall caught my eye. Can you tell me how you constructed it and what it’s made of?
beautiful and colourful quilt, by the way I have a posting contains colourful pictures too. Here is the link : http://priajelita.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/shes-a-rainbow/. Please check it if you have time. Thank you in advance
It looks great! Sewing really is so relaxing and accomplishing! Just love the quilt 🙂
This is so awesome. This is so inspirational! I am new to the blogging scene, but it would mean so much to have more followers! I craft, knit, crochet and bake and I will be posting tutorials, how to’s, and little quirks about my life there! Please check me out anyone who sees this once again, I loved your post!
Your quilt looks very classic and a bit Amish as well, although with a modern take. Beautiful.
I love love LOVE this quilt!!! Seriously. I got a stack of Kona cottons from Kathy at Pink Chalk in all purples and oranges. it is so gorgeous that I hate to un-bundle it. But it would be perfect for this quilt. So maybe I’ll just take a picture of the fabric bundle to frame (kidding…sorta…) and then cut into it!

This looks awesome Katie! 🙂
wanna go to Island Quilter? Maybe the 6th if I can get it off?

Stunning! Are you going to write a pattern for this?
wow, wow, wow!
Very pretty indeed. I’d love to be able to sew.
