::Pantone Pop Quilt::

January 18, 2012 By Katie

I love orange and purple, but can’t say the rest of Pantone’s spring colors appealed to me.

I have a hard time working with colors I don’t like…or doing anything I don’t like or want to do for that matter, so I stacked some bolts on the counter at the Quilting Loft and kept changing them out until I found a color story that worked for me.

Seattle is not kind on light this time of year.  So I want you to know that the dark purple is a bit lighter than pictured.

I love it when I look at my design wall and like what’s there.  I even generally will smile to myself.  Who wouldn’t?

The half-square quilt design is not new (and certainly not original to me), but simply a redo of my HST Love.  It is pretty fun to mess about with different colorways.  I love the punch that this colorway creates.

The fabrics are:

granite ( I think this is the name), prune and tangerine shot cottons ( I love these shot cottons, but think they are a pain in the ass to iron after they have been washed)

the pomegranate color is Moda cross weave # 38

Kona solids in baby blue, white and petunia

This Amy Butler print would never have caught my eye, but when I started pulling fabrics for backing it spoke to me.  P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

After its time as a class sample for my Seeing Value class it will be a long overdue wedding gift to some dear friends of mine.

Hoping you are all having a good week.  From the media hype, Seattle is suppose to be blanketed in snow by 3am.  But I might eat this quilt before I believe it.

Bring it on, I’d be happy enough to be snowed in for two weeks or more provided I have power to my sewing machine.

Beautiful and very unique colors….love it! Enjoy the snow! We got our first snow yesterday….kind of silly to be without it here in new england in jan. I know you will create wonders while the white stuff comes down

It’s beautiful with a strong personality. I think it’s an equal partner to the one in your header. One is masculine to me, one feminine. Fascinating to see what the change in color scheme does to a pattern. I am in love with both of these!

That’s absolutely gorgeous! I’m curious: do you sew together a whole bunch of HSTs first and then lay it out, sketch out the colored layout beforehand, or cut a bunch of triangles out and play with them on your design wall?

Hi, I left Seattle in 2007 and I don’t recall a lot of quilting or quilters in Seattle at that time. When I moved to Skagit, I wrote an article on quilting in that region and the quilt festival that takes place in Anacortes around the Skagit Tulip Festival.

I like your quilts. The lighting isn’t any better in Bellingham than Seattle this time of year–grays, whites, and greens.

The more exotic the quilt and the more celver the quilt design the better it is to dream under. My quilt only gets used in the winter when the nights are darker and longer. I could probably quaterback the Superbowl winning team under that one. Sew on. Delighted to have seen your work.

Personally, I found myself pretty impressed with your quilt. It is beautiful, and obviously the work of someone who is very skilled. However, I had to write and share my girlfriend’s reaction, which after the squeal of delight then involved taking my computer from me, scrolling, asking me if the quilt was for sale, and then talking about how we could decorate our new place in a few months with a quilt like that.

So, on behalf of both of us, thanks so much for sharing, and good luck surviving the snow in Seattle. Here in New York City, we got a bit this weekend, but it is all pretty much gone now. Take care!
