Modern Quilts, seattle quilting

::Mother’s Day::

This was the first year in many that I actually got to see my Mom on Mother’s Day.  How lucky am I?  I thought today I might show you a little of her handiwork.

The quilts my Mom has made us over the years are used in the daily rotation.  My favorites are her hand appliqued butterfly quilts.  This one takes my breath away when I see if from close and afar.

I just love the secondary design the butterflies create.

The boarder is even appliqued.  I have fond memories of my Mother and her two best friends drinking tea and hand stitching at the kitchen table, working on projects like this.  I can only imagine the hours that went into it. Patience I will never possess.

It’s becoming a bit undone in places, but I’d much rather see it be used than stuck in a closet.

This one arrived on my doorstep when I lived far from family in Flagstaff.  I loved it instantly and hung it for the longest time because I didn’t want my Fe Dog to make it untidy.  I eventually decided quilts were meant to be lovingly used and have spent many a night cuddled on the couch under it.

This one inspired me to create one similar last year for my Mom’s birthday.

I love how it turned out.

I even put a little message on the back.

It wasn’t that long ago that I sat at my sewing machine following my Mother’s instruction on how to construct my first quilt, a simple nine-patch.

She was the one that taught me how to make seams match, and then give a laugh when I would grab my seam ripper if they didn’t.  Mom also gave me the tip that if you paid attention to the block’s construction, your quilt would come out square in the end.  These small tips make a big difference to me and my work.

Thanks Mom!

    They are so gorgeous. That first butterfly one is amazing, I didn’t even notice the butterflies until the close up! And love hearing others who believe quilts are meant to be used. My SIL sticks them in closets because she doesn’t want them ruined 🙁
