In October a few of my girlfriends and I were lucky enough to sneak away to a cabin on Anderson Island and sew, eat and drink (somewhat in that order).
I had been playing with wonky nine-patches with some Christmas fabric and wasn’t much taken with the results.
So we moved onto strip-piecing some random strips from a bin and wondered what would happen if we combined a nine-patch with some strip-pieced bits.
Luckily, Noelle doesn’t go anywhere without her bolt of Carolina Chambray and let me have access to this golden cloth.
We pieced together a simple baby quilt lickity-split. The blocks on the right, Sandie went home with and I’m sure she will come up with something amazing. Doesn’t Noelle look cute in her doggie pjs?
The Chambray just picks up all the color so nicely.
Especially on a windy day with everything snapping around.
Not sure how to quilt it, thinking boxes.
A nine-patch block was the first patchwork I ever learned from my Mom. She taught me to strip-pieced three strips of fabric and sub-cut it to create the lines of three with an alternating pattern and center.
If you wanna try your hand at a wonky nine-patch there are dozens of tutorials out there. My favorites are by Jenny of Allsorts and Elizabeth of Oh Fransson.

It’s very striking with the solid grey background and the nine patch row has this great sense of motion about it. :0) If I were quilting it, I think squares is where it would be at.
They all turned out beautifully! Nice prints, colors, and patterns. Great job by you all. Mtetar
What a great trade. Is that a magic bolt of chambray? Sounds like just the thing to carry along, quite like Mary Poppin’s umbrella. Boxes sound great for the quilting!
I have followed their work and even knowing how to make patchwork and quilt; I completely understand the process through the images. Congratulations on the beautiful drawings.
Cheers to you in 2013!
Loads of fun, love how it turned out 🙂
That quilt is fabulous! Square quilting would be awesome ; )
Hmmm..I’m wearing those PJs right now. Maybe I better spark up my wardrobe! Love how it came out, we better hoard all the chambray – I think I still a little more than 1/2 a bolt :), it’s a good thing I sew faster in my head than real life.
Very nice.
