I honestly thought upon my return from Quiltcon that I would have a hard time sitting down to more traditional quilts, but the reality is that I love improvisational modern quilts AND simple shapes of traditional quilts.
I think I’ve explained this back and forth process before. Traditional is just easy on the design brain and helps me hone my value and coordination skills, while improvisational does overtime.
As soon as I walked back into the Livudio and laid my eyes on my Mendocino triangle quilt up on the design wall I wanted to set to work, but first needed to push some others to the top of the list.
Nicquelle’s Quilt needed to be quilted.
Now it just needs binding.
I did construct the backing improvisationally. As usual I went with a vertical design. The little “kites” I cut from the sides of the quilt top were too cute to not be placed somewhere.
I’ve also become pretty set over the years in my mind that I prefer an allover quilting design. I knew the spirals were it from the beginning and enlisted Sandie’s help for that.
We had an afternoon of free-motion play at her long arm after I finally got over my initial ohhing and awwing at how much I love this little quilt.
Here’s a question for you. Why is it that I always want to bind a quilt in a fabric that I have extinguished from my stash? Does that happen to anyone else?

Yep, I’m still drawn to simple and traditional looks too. Just can’t get tired of the perfect square or a pointy triangle.

Ha ha. My friend said to me today, “you and your triangles!”

I came home to some traditional-ish WIPs too. Your quilt is beautiful, and yes, I think you decide you love certain fabrics for bindings after you’ve USED them for bindings.
Brenda says
well, your favourites are gone because they’re your favourites. I have the same issue. As for traditional vs modern, I think it’s a false dichotomy. They’re not opposite, but on a continuum. Traditional inspires modern.

modern traditionalism right?!

I go back and forth all the time! For a while I kept some star blocks always for when I needed a break from improv with some precision piecing. Now I transition back and forth more fluidly as the mood hits.

I love the traditional quilts done in the new funky fabrics ; )

Beautiful, I love traditional too, with a temptation to explore the modern. Love the spiral quilting on the ‘little’ quilt. Nicely done.

Katie I think I have some of that Erin McMorris fabric if you want to make a trade.

They’re very nice, and Great Job! Triangles may look simple, but can be hard getting a perfect point especially for beginners. Perfect Points are what makes the craftsmanship well done. I could be wrong, but it is because I’m a Novice when it comes to quilting. Be Blessed, http://projectsbyMtetar.wordpress.com

You and your triangles – me and my squares! Can’t stop creating blocks & grids – maybe ‘cos my life is far from feeling as though I’m on the straight and narrow at the moment!

A fairytale mix, just beautiful colors together. I’m tempted to dig out the triangle templates, now. And I think your choice of all over spirals is spot on. Oh, the temptations…
; )

I LOVE the all-over quilting (those spirally swirls are so right), and you make me love any shade of purple.

Is the triangle quilt from a commercial pattern? I love it.
