I said I was going to catch up on posting finished quilts this year and here’s the start. It does help in finding the extra time when you’re wide awake at 4:30am.
My intension was to use the Heather Ross Mendocino line and make a quilt for myself.
I cut the line all up into BIG 60 degree triangles after seeing a quilt made by Patchwork Notes (her blog is private now) and placed it on the design wall. Mine didn’t have the same appeal at all. So I started again by pulling the blue and brown prints from the mix.
The beauty of stash building is a successful quilt is achievable without leaving home and sometimes it’s happy hour:) I collected my potential pile and cut a few to place. A little Amy Butler, Kaffe, Violet Craft, Alexander and some yummy crimson, orange and mustard prints. As usual I have some prints that didn’t work, so I see another scrappy quilt in my future.
As I cut my quilt kept growing until I found my design wall loaded with a queen size. I bypassed Jefe and made a solo household decision to go for a bed quilt. I figured what man wouldn’t want to sleep under mermaids with starfish as pasties?
Sandie and I quilted it with swirls, which I knew from experience on Nicquelle’s quilt would be amazing. I don’t go outside in winter unless I have to, so this is the only photo of the back I have, but it is a mix of flannel and a selvedge to selvedge of the large mermaid print running the length. It feels good to use it up!
The seaweed just seemed right for finishing it off with binding.
There you have it, the first of my finished quilts from 2013 that have remained unposted. Only five more finished quilts to post, one zillion unfinished projects to finish and two closets of fabric to use up and I’ll have accomplished my 2014 resolutions. I clearly won’t have time to work out.
I’ll have to plan another with the blues and browns that I have cut and waiting.
If you follow me on Instagram, I’m still destashing 6″ square sets. Currently I’ve got sets of green available with black next, then I’ll start all over again with pink. If you’re interested email me at sewkatiedid@gmail.com. I can also put you on a list for a certain color when they become available.
This is gorgeous! Mendocino is my all time favourite fabric line and it looks amazing here. The kelp stripe binding could be my favourite bit!
It’s gorgeous!!!
Congratulations! It was good seeing you last Sunday.
What a beautiful quilt. Great fabric choices.
I know the feeling. I have 3 unfinished quilts and not enough time to do them. I love the colour combination in this. 😀
Gosh this is sooo pretty!!
I agree re having a stash means being able to make a quilt ‘from the shelf’. Makes me feel like it didn’t cost me anything!
Beautiful, such a cohesive group of colours! It’s so reassuring to hear you say you cut stuff then end up taking it out coz it doesn’t work. I thought it was only me that had to physically see if things work on the wall!
Makes for a load of scraps doesn’t it?!
Absolutely stunning quilt! One of my favorite color combos!!
When you say the triangles are “BIG” — how big are they? Thanks!
They are about 9″ tall and about as wide:)
Beautiful and inspiring. I’ve got about 1/3 of a 60 degree triangle quilt sewn for my twin granddaughters. Your photo moves me to finish it for their birthday in April. Thanks.
Beautiful color choices. Swirls are my go-to longarm design.
Me too!
Just beautiful, as usual!
Beautiful colours, very impressed. I’d love to make one, maybe one day!
Lovely project! I especially love the mermaids and the main color of the quilt!
Stunning!
Beauty! I just hope my fingers are not “sticky” if it happens to be at the shop, on display, for a class. I’ll be sure to keep them washed. 😉
I admire you, what a beautiful job
Stunning work. I can only dream…..
What a fun post! I’m sure I have just about as many tops waiting, and piles of fabric screaming my name. Some days all I can manage is to buy more fabric. It’s all part of the process after all….
Hey Katie! Love those curves you posted about the other day! Looks like those bundles are selling well for you, yay!! 🙂 We could use a few more of your lovely books at The Quilting Loft!! Hopefully I’ll see you around soon. Take Care! – Ali
i’ll bring a couple in when I bring the qayg pillow next week! Is there somewhere you guys could order them from though? Thanks Ali.
Glad you’re sharing your finishes! I’m with you on not going outside in winter. blech.
YOU DID THIS ??? The spirals are SOOO regular !
did it on a long arm with a template. easy peasy:)
I love it! The colors, the triangles. I may just have to make a triangle quilt this year. I love the idea of big triangles. Did you use a special ruler to cut them?
I love the Super 60 ruler!

I LOVE those spirals that you quilted! They are subtle but make such a big impact on the final quilt. Such a beautiful, snuggly blanket.
Your quilt is gorgeous!
I love triangles. This quilt seems to be a bit of a challenge but I love how it looks. Did you use the 60 degree ruler?
