::Somewhat Circular Hex::

January 23, 2015 By Katie

sewkatiedid:somewhat circular hexagon quilt

I didn’t manage to get a good full shot of my Somewhat Circular Hexagon quilt before bolting out the door to teach.  I had to move it out since I wanted it to be hanging in the shop as a new sample for next Thursday’s Hexagons By Machine workshop.  There are openings in this class if you are curious about the methods of strip cutting hexagons and piecing them by machine.

I’ll be sure to get some photos of it next week and post them.  I’ve got my eye on some huge floor pillows that want this design on them.  You know I like pillows.

Somewhat Circular is my second quilt finish for 2015, I think this quilt doubles what quilts I produced in 2014.  My first was my Double-Trouble quilt hanging at the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild’s exhibit opening at Island Quilter.  I’ll be on the island Sunday for an Open Quilting Studio at IQ and hope to snap some pictures of it to share.  Anyone’s welcome to come work on projects and check out the guild’s quilts.

sewkatiedid:somewhat circular hex

The binding was a hard pick on this one, but the black print worked great with the backing.

sewkatiedid:2somewhat circular hexagon quilt

As you can see there are a few lines of quilting still needing to be removed and some to be added in, but the color way is spot on and the Essex linen really works with the black background fabrics.

sewkatiedid/cutting corners binding technique

I used this quilt to photo my Cutting Corners Binding Tutorial this week if you missed it.

It’s a beautiful Seattle day to stay inside and sew (and avoid laundry;).

Happy Friday Peeps!

Cutting Corners Binding Technique

January 20, 2015 By Katie

sewkatiedid/cutting corners binding technique/tutorial

I posted a photo on my Instagram the other day and a comment was made about how I stitch the corners of my binding.  Years ago I noticed my mom used it on a quilt and I just messed with it until it was second nature for me.  I’m sure the method has a name.  I’ll call it the Cutting Corners binding technique.

I use a ladder stitch to bind my quilts and if you need some direction on that Turning Turning’s blog has a great tutorial.

sewkatiedid/cutting corners binding technique

1) As I approach a corner I fold the corner binding towards the middle of the quilt and bring the binding’s folded edges on the right and left sides together at the inside corner so that they just touch.

sewkatiedid:cutting corners binding technique

Secure where the right and left sides come together with a clip.

The goal is to aim for the right and left fold of the binding to come together at an equal measurement and create 90 angle at the corner.  Binding clips on either side of the corner can help even things out.

cutting corners binding technique

2) When I approach the corner I take the needle into the quilt back and bring it out through the binding’s corner fold. It might be easier to do the next step before pulling the needle through.

sewkatiedid/cutting corner binding technique and tutorial

3)  Grab with your needle the opposing folded corner of binding and if things are looking even pull your needle through.

These two points where the needle is pictured above is where you will complete some tacking stitches.

sewkatiedid/cutting corners binding technique and tutorial

4)  Once you feel it’s got enough stitches to be secure, take your needle into the right side and  through into the quilt backing, coming out into the fold of the binding.  Continue with the ladder stitch.

sewkatiedid:somewhat circular hex

It should look all nice and square from the front.  I’ve never had any issues with it coming untucked.  Anyone know of the name of this technique?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Poof, Somewhat Circular Hex is another sample for my Hexagons by Machine workshop next week;)  Now I need to get a post up on it.

Happy Tuesday.  I’m off to get my tax crap together, exciting stuff Deb;)

::Somewhat Circular Hex::

January 15, 2015 By Katie

sewkatiedid/somewhat circular hexagon quilt

Regardless of my best intentions posting anything here gets pushed to the back.

I have a new season of lectures and workshops coming up and am always hoping to finish up at least one more sample for design options.  I love this practice as it allows me to reacquaint myself with a technique. Often I’ll gain perspective to share with my students that I didn’t originally think of.  Design wall time is invaluable to my process and a main focus of my workshops.  Leftovers from the original project are generally my go to, but more often than not, one project’s scraps merge into another project.

But it’s that desire for a finish that keeps me from here.  What I need to get over is always wishing to post that finished project.  Especially since I sew way faster in my head than real life.

So I think my intention for blogging this year is to focus on process AND post about it.

Marketing workshops is at the forefront of posting too and I wanna say I’m lucky that my classes fill as if late, but I also have to give myself credit that I’ve been working hard to figure out what people are inspired by, it’s not an accident.

sew katie did/somewhat circular hex

But if there’s a spot I like to make sure that I’m working on a sample. And that’s just what happened with this hex quilt.

There’s some quilting that needs to come out here and there, but I’m pretty happy with it. The trend and my love for dense quilting however isn’t fitting for the utilitarian use of baby quilts in my opinion, cardboard comes to mind, but we’ll see how it washes out.  I probably could have helped it out by selecting a type of batting that would be more supple instead of just grabbing a scrap that fit.

sewkatiedid/throwing stars

My To the Point workshop is full, but I’m working on a sample from the hex scraps for it.  They’re wee and currently being quilted.  Hoping for that finish today along with hanging sleeves/labels for Quiltcon quilts and squaring or at least picking out binding for the hex.

Thanks for reading, I’ve obviously got things to do;)

Improvisational Quilting Techniques Pillow Series

December 16, 2014 By Katie

sewkatiedid/modern patchwork workshop series II

sewkatiedid/modern patchwork block workshops series II

The first group that joined me in my modern patchwork series made it so fun and I enjoyed making the samples so much that I’ve decided to run it again in the new year AND I’ve added a second part to the series. The color combo is so wacked and I’m 100% smitten with it.

Each of these pillows I’ve made with techniques I love to use and teach.  One of the things so enjoyable about quilting is figuring out new ways to do things and I’ve certainly learned some good tips to pass along with these.

Here goes (and if you were wait listed or unable to do all of the first session than you can also sign up via The Quilting Loft).

Please sign up via The Quilting Loft’s site.

Take one session, or the whole series, to explore the merging of traditional and improvisational patchwork techniques, one block at a time. Katie Pedersen, author of Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts will guide you through the techniques and skills needed for each block, variations in block design, and the secondary designs multiple blocks create. While we’re at it, we’ll get friendly with our design wall, touch on color and value theory, and cover the advantages of constructing a block that is either precise in piecing, or more willy-nilly.

*Even if you are a seasoned quilter you can up your patchwork game by adding improvisational techniques to your knowledge base.

::Pop::

December 9, 2014 By Katie

Well happy Tuesday everyone. Today I’ve got zip pouches on the list and class tonight, but thought I’d pop in here first.

Pantone announced the new colors for 2015.  Have you seen them yet?

sewkatiedid/Double-Trouble block

They must have subliminally gotten to me already, but seeing them inspired me to put this Double-Trouble block back up.

Marsala?

Pantone_Introducing_Color_of_the_Year_Marsala_banner

It reminds me of the L’OREAL eyeshadow and nail polish I use to wear in the 80s.  And come to think of it I have some MAC shadow currently in this color.

pantone What do you think?

There might be one space left in my zip pouch workshop tonight or the invisible zipper pillow class Thursday if you’re thinking about some gifts.  Check it out;)

::Sewing For Me::

December 4, 2014 By Katie

sewkatiedid/double-trouble quilt

I pushed through to finish up my Quiltcon submissions and the last of the class samples for my new block series (coming up soon) so that I can have some precious sewing time purely for me.

sewkatiedid/fabric

I’ve been spending this ‘me’ time with a borderline crazy amount of holiday fabric:) and of course formulating new class ideas in my head because I can’t help it.

Sewkatiedid/square in a square

A little bit of Black Friday etc fabric shopping might have happened as well.  You know I’m running out;)

Sewkatiedid/Spit-Personality Nine-Patch

A few more blocks on my Split Personality Nine-Patch (which I’ll be teaching next weekend) and I can start the piecing process.  Crossing fingers for a quilting finish to have this on the bed by Christmas.

Whatcha making and any good Christmas fabric you’re drooling for this season?  I’ve been seeing some good stuff out there.

::Happy Fabrics::

November 21, 2014 By Katie

IMG_4269

TGIF peeps.

I’m onto all sorts of projects for the holiday.  Last season I was struck by the color palette my friend Allison used for the zip pouch she gifted me, such happy colors for me.  Around that time Cloud9 Fabrics mailed me a FQ pack of their Up, Up, and Away fabric line with some of those inspiring colors included.

Cloud9’s fabric lines of late having really been catching my eye, so I decided a Quilt As You Go technique pillow was in order.

There’s something deeply satisfying about digging around in your stash to find the perfect fabric collaboration.

I polished it off with some invisible zipper skills.

Have a good weekend.

I hope to have some projects finished by Monday (thus the short but sweet post;)

Halloween Take 10

October 29, 2014 By Katie

I love everything about Halloween.

I love the memories of Roan’s costumes over the years, the bands of kids, the season it lands in, the decorations, watching Roan separate his bounty when he gets home and of course my own childhood memories.

Yoda

The first year Roan and I ever went trick-or-treating he asked me if candy was good for you?  I thought about it and replied back that I thought it might be good for the soul.

He’s definitely his mother’s child when it comes to having a sweet tooth.  I’ve been know to pillage his loot for a Jolly Rancher and I’m pretty sure I bought a roll of Sprees at a gas station last week that might have been ten years old.  They’re hard to come by you know;)

This will be our first Halloween in the house.  Our urban life was good to us with our neighborhood shops offering treats and our friends allowing us to tag along, but THIS Halloween in our own hood is going to be the Halloween to remember.

 Until next year at least;)

2948510716_29544d2b29_z

And of course its an excuse to make stuff right?

sewkatiedid/Halloween bag

Because it’s part of the remembering.

sewkatiedid/napkins

Napkins this year.  Much needed with chili.

sewkatiedid

Hands down, my all time favorite crafted for Halloween item is Roan’s trick or treat bag that I made using the quilt as you go method.  We just fold his old one into it for extra storage.

It just came together perfect and I have such a love for all the scraps involved.

sewkatiedid/quilt as you go trick or treat bag

Haha, I look at this photo and it makes me want to spend my day making potholders or a pillow!

::Happy Snowballed Sunshine::

October 14, 2014 By Katie

sewkatiedid/Happy Snowballed Sunshine quilt

There’s no sugar coating it, our family has had a full dose of life reality lately, so it wasn’t a mistake that I pulled this bit of happy colored sunshine out of the pile of unfinished tops to quilt.

I needed some mind occupation.

sewkatiedid/happy snowballed sunshine quilt

It seems that each quilt has a memory of its making somewhere along all its steps, and not in a bad way, but quilting and binding Happy Snowballed Sunshine will remind me for a time of my father-in-law John passing.

sewkatiedid/happy snowballed sunshine quilt

This quilt and its association with this particular time reminded me of quilting Supernova.  Supernova was the quilt that I was working on four years ago yesterday, the same day John got his kidney transplant.

There were tears of joy quilted into that quilt and a few sad ones for the donor’s family too.  That generous lady knew that in her passing she could gift a family some of those ‘best of times’ as we call them.

And she did.

sewkatiedid/happy snowballed sunshine

But quilting this also made me thankful that I have creative things to do that occupy my mind when I need them.

sewkatiedid/happy snowballed sunshine

It also solidified something that seems so obvious, but I’d never really thought about it. My love for fun and funky color combos that lift my mood to happy when I see them, even if the times don’t match.

sewkatiedid/Happy Snowballed Sunshine

And the prints that are hard to cut into?  Now is the time to use them.

sewkatiedid/happy snowballed sunshine back

I’ll gift this bit of happy at some point.  This quilt hasn’t found its person yet, but that baby will add another dimension to the quilt memory.

john best

(thanks Sounders FC  instagram for photo)

And for my happy memory I’ve been reminding myself to remember the healthy John.  The John that would sit on my couch drinking a martini telling me funny stories.

He would have liked my happy quilt and he definitely loved sunshine;)

Stripped Herringbone Pillows

September 15, 2014 By Katie

Half way through September peeps!  It doesn’t surprise me, last week evaporated with lightening speed.

sewkatiedid/stripped pillow from design seeds workshop series

I did manage early in the week to finished a pillow sample for the “stripped” session of my design seeds series.

sewkatiedid/stripped sample for design seeds workshop seriesMy Juki and I are still becoming acquainted with one another.  I’ll have to post some questions for you Juki lovers to answer at a later time.

sewkatiedid/stripped sample for design seeds workshop series

I also have a ton of leftover ‘seeds’ to start some others.  This color way is really growing on me.

sewkatiedid/design seeds

I played a bit with this improv spiderweb idea,

sewkatiedid/design seeds patchwork workshop series

and diamonds, which are new to me, but appeal to my triangle obsession.  My curves sample got pushed to this week.

sewkatiedid/drygoods design open quilting studio

Wednesday I spent the day at Drygoods Design’s new location in Pioneer square for my Open Quilting Studio.  As usual, Keli rocked the window.  With teaching on the road I sadly won’t be able to sew again there until November.  Looking forward to it.

Thursday I taught the first session of my Exploring Inside the Box series.  I’m thankful to have a great group of ladies to be spending one night a month with.  Everyone was please with their design seeds by the time class was over;)

Sewkatiedid/improvisational triangles workshop

Friday I was lucky enough to hang out with the Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild teaching Improvisational Elongated Triangles.  I always get involved and forget to take photos at my workshops, but those ladies are the real deal and I look forward to spending some time with them at a sew-in here and there.

sounders

I caught the ferry back over to downtown and Jefe met me via water taxi for the Sounders game.

team newly

I couldn’t make it this year to the Bainbridge Quilt Festival because some sixty friends and family walked in honor of my brother-in-law in the Seattle ALS Association Fundraiser.  Our team, Team Newby, was at check-in the 6th largest earner for the walk in Seattle!

Special thanks to the Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild ladies for all their words of kindness, advice, story sharing, and donating during my workshop;)  It all helps those navigating this awful disease.

Ok, I’m off to try and keep the pace.  I did one read over and am pushing ‘publish’ for the week.

Northwest Quilting Expo next week and plenty to do in-between.

Happy Week!

Exploring Inside a Box | Improv Patchwork Series

September 2, 2014 By Katie

sewkatiedid/block series(Session I:Boxed In Block)

I’ve loved the idea of teaching a workshop series in which each session focused on a single block.  A block of the month sort of thing, minus the sampler quilt finish.

I wanted the series to touch on both traditional and improvisational patchwork piecing techniques and construction, but focus more on the design process and students creating their own unique block.  Of course being with classmates along the way feeds that inspiration and generates ideas outside the box, or maybe inside;)

The idea of pillows as the delivery system for this workshop idea hung with me for a few reasons:

1) If you know me, you know I like pillows.

2) We need pillows, more pillows.

3) Pillows are gems to perfect sewing skills, like an invisible zipper.

4) Pillows provide realistic parameters in which to create, design and buy more fabric, all with little intimidation or money.

5) No one can say to you, ‘Go big or go home.”  when you’re making a pillow.

So pillows it is.

sewkatiedid/block series

(Session II: Double-Trouble)

By going small we’d have time to enjoy, talk and develop our own design process.

sewkatiedid/double-trouble

That’s right, I’m a ‘pillow maker,’ a term that cracks me up because I actually heard it used once as a derogatory term by a quilter that didn’t think another really made quilts, only pillows.  I’m not saying you have to be a pillow maker, you can even be a sampler maker if that’s your thing, but we’ll be exploring with in the confines of a box.  Go big or go small, we’ll make it yours.

So here goes.
