::Collecting Alexander Henry::

August 11, 2013 By Katie

Do you ever buy fabric with nothing in mind?

sewkatiedidJust kidding.

Quilt Sandwich makes it hard for me to resist with their stock of Alexander Henry.  Even though I need ZERO fabric, they make me feel like I’m running out.

I’ve collected a pile of the previous Ghastlies lines and ever since market have been waiting for Ghastlie Holiday to come out.

sewkatiedid/invisible zipper tutorialPillows have already been made as samples for my invisible zipper class and the sage color will go onto my my holiday couch to replace some Halloween Ghastlies pillows.

Maybe a holiday A-Line skirt?

sewkatiedidThis jeweled web will be the backside of napkins as soon as I purchase the coordinate with the little costumed kids holding hands in a row.

sewkatiedidsewkatiedidThe detail in Aoi Has Two Sisters is what you expect from Alexander Henry.  Each dress is made of a fabulous print itself.  Even the flowers feature different prints.

sewkatiedid

I’ve already made some napkins for a friend and myself.

Napkins and pillows apparently give me a good excuse to buy fabric.

Happy Sunday!  Now go sew.

::No Resisting::

July 1, 2013 By Katie

I’ve long been a fan of a good cross-hatch.  First Alexander Henry came out with Heath and I’ve definitely thrown my fair share of it into projects here and there. Then Carolyn Friedlander came out with her wonderful cross-hatch version and now Timeless Treasures has a tone on tone version in every color.

sewkatiedidThe West Seattle Fabric Company has several colors of the collection.  I couldn’t resist these jewel tones.  I’m trying to move onto some navy in my work too, though I’m having some difficulty escaping my purple obsession lately and this was good fuel.

I also picked up more of Michael Miller’s cotton couture in teal.  This solid is fabulously soft and just seemed to polish off the new additions.

sewkatiedid/tunnel vision quilt from Quilting Modern

My thought with these crosshatch prints and solids are some mini versions of the Tunnel Vision quilt from the book.  I’ve made a mini pillow version with Heath recently and am going to branch out with the other colors offered in this Timeless Treasures collection.

sewkatiedid/log cabin pillow topsIn fact, I’m off to quilt those tops now and make them into pillows with invisible zips.  Class coming soon.

We’re in heatwave mode in Seattle, so it’s a good day to sew or maybe visit a nicely air-conditioned fabric shop!

Happy first day of July!

sewkatiedid/quilt sandwich

Look what arrived from Quilt Sandwich?!

I don’t know what it is about Anna Maria Horner fabrics, but each line takes a bit to grow on me.

Then I think maybe I’ve waited too long and it’s all gone.

sewkatiedid/zip pouchWith a Zip Pouch class coming up I thought I would put my favorite of the pile (the poppies) to use immediately for a sample.  I didn’t even wash it, gasp…so unlike me.

sewkatiedid/zip pouchSuch a great poppy red.

sewkatiedid/quilt sandwichOh, and look what’s coming soon to Quilt Sandwich?  I think there are key fobs in my future.  I’ve only had all the hardware for a year.  What can I say, I like to mull things over for awhile.

::Virgencitas::

June 2, 2013 By Katie

No one does Mexican folklore fabric like Alexander Henry.  I’d like to know the story behind what draws them to this genre of art?

I picked up more of the La Virgencita line when I saw it at Island Quilter.  Island Quilter carries two color ways and they ship!

Sewkatiedid/grape crush quiltI’ve now made an apron and a set of pillows for Christmas time with the purple color way.  The metallic bling adds some nice depth.

sewkatiedid/seam ripper IPA quilt

The tea colored background made it into the back of my Seam Ripper IPA quilt.  I really wanted to showcase this fabulous print and did not piece a thing into the backing.

I bought some more to make my sister-in-law pillows for her birthday.  Raised in Catholic schools she has collected virgin statues for years.

lupe/alexander henry

My new favorite this year that Island Quilter has is Lupe.  It’s a delicate print that will make its way into napkins or little girl projects.

Perfect Sunday Stash!

::Stash Additions::

May 27, 2013 By Katie

When I shop with Quilt Sandwich, I drop a load into my cart and then edit myself back out.  I like to curate a coordinating stack with one focus print and its supporters.  sewkatiedid il_170x135.416811187_m5vw il_170x135.422182885_iuci il_170x135.329998356I grew up in a household of Japanese art, brought back by my folks when we were living in Tokyo.  Not all Japanese fabric speaks to me, but the whimsical Alexander Henry Anasema Doll fabric did.

sewkatiedidOnly Alexander Henry would think to add the detail of a heart to make this doll’s lips.

sewkatiedidThe others are stunningly detailed too.

sewkatiedidThe hair, the kimonos and the background all shine.

sewkatiedidI paired some small scale Lizzy House Pearl and Circles in grass green and this other almost solid called Piper Scales in orange made by Dear Stella.

sewkatiedid/erin mcmorrisThe black and white flower is by Erin McMorris.  She does flowers well and I stopped by her booth to tell her so.

sewkatiedidLook what she’s got coming for us!  I’m buying this whole modern line for sure.

Hope you’re having a great weekend.  I was ready for some down time after Quilt Market and Jacquie’s and my workshops last week.

::Happy Mother’s Day::

May 12, 2013 By Katie

We’re lying low for Mother’s Day.  We have a family dinner planned and the rest of the day is designated for cleaning out the new old Vanagon we just purchased. I’m promised a new hoodie from our neighborhood brewery once they are back in stock, but only on the condition that I retire my old Tractor Tavern one.  It said so in the card.

sewkatiedid/stashI treated myself to a spree at Stash in Columbia City.  Happy Mother’s Day to me!

The summer like weather in Seattle has gotten the best of me and I put together this combo while I was in the shop.  Stash is carrying a load of the Michael Miller Cotton Couture.  The quality and softness of these solids is incredible. I narrowed it down to these four and the prints.

I think I’ll splash in some dusty purple from my stash to pull in the Alexander Henry.  I’m so drawn to the colors of this print.

sewkatiedidI’ve purchased this Tula Pink in another color way at Stash.  This is just another example of an good active solid.  Something to help meld other prints together in a quilt.

sewkatiedidRoan, always such a serious child, gave me this for Mother’s Day.  I’m off to be as nice as a ninja, though I might skip being like a hippo and go for a run instead considering the amount of bacon and pancakes I just ate.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all.

::Sunday Stash::

May 5, 2013 By Katie

Sunshine in Seattle!  We might take a trip to Vashon today and that of course will involve a trip to Island Quilter.  Emily Cier has her quilts on exhibit there all month, so a trip is needed.  I love sewing in their windows on sunny days, but today will be a family trip.

sewkatiedid/sunday stash

I did some replacement shopping.  You know that feeling when you are running low on a favorite fabric and the panic sets in?  That’s how I was feeling with the red circled Aneela Hoey and the Wild Thyme in the dark green.  I love to have a dark value green in the stash, they are hard to come by.  The darker green has become a replacement for Amy Butler’s Wallflower in green that I still can’t believe they didn’t reprint along with the mustard yellow and pink.

A few of my stash additions from Island Quilter actually had purpose!

sewkatiedid/smitten kitten

Out of print Alexander Henry Smitten Kitten is finally making an appearance in a quilt back and I needed the Aneela Hoey Circle Stripes to complete the binding.

Modern Stash Archive Value Quilt/Sewkatiedid

The poppy red was a perfect match.  I’m so going to enjoy this fabric on the back and now am left with the blue color way for another.  I’ve got one more side to sew down and this quilt will be up for show.  Handling the wool batting takes a little getting use to.  I might create a little stability next time by serging the edge of the quilt before sewing the first side of the binding on.  But all is fine with a little wacky binding!

sewkatiedid

My other project was another ironing board cover.  I was excited to have the wider board, but Jefe didn’t like it for ironing his pants, so we went back to the old one.  I love this Dandy Lion home decor print.  It even looks pretty on the back of my bedroom door.

Island Quilter just got a restock of some new Alexander Henry fabrics, so off I go to get ready!  To me that’s like being a kid in a candy store.

::Sunday Stash #?::

February 20, 2011 By Katie

I’m Destashing and clearing out EVERYTHING.  I have three categories: Goodwill, Destash, or Class.  The rest is reorganized.  I’m being brutal.  If it hasn’t been touched in a year it goes.

Some fabrics I’ve just been hoarding.  I grab them up when I see them online and now I couldn’t possibly use it all.  Some fabrics have that power over me.  So I’m letting a little under a yard of this favorite go.  It’s Alexander Henry’s Whisper Wing or Whispering Wing.

I’ll save what I have for the perfect quilt back.  I last used some in this simple half square triangle quilt made for little Sofia.

I made my Mom a traditional quilt with some of this fabric in the brown color way that was based off a butterfly quilt she made for me years ago.  I’m visiting my friend with a mid-arm quilting machine next week to check out some quilting possibilities.  Mom will want something flowing.  Her birthday’s in May, so time is still on my side.

Happy Sunday!

::Stinking Cute/Sunday Stash 40::

October 24, 2010 By Katie

Ok, it’s stinking cute AND it’s flannel.  I needed batting and zippers from Joann’s and of course I perused the flannel.  Not much there, but this yard-burner.  Jammies, pillow cases, receiving blankets… I bought a few yards at 60% off.

The aliens depicted are of the “peace out” variety.

And it has a coordinate already located in my fabric stash.

July 18, 2010 By Katie

These little beauties by Sevenberry are my Sunday Stash.  The colors are fab and that mustard combines with loads of other prints including Mendocino and Amy Butler Wallflower.  Perfect in place of a dot with their small scale.  I first laid my eyes on them via Flickr and bought myself a few yards of each.  I’m presently working on a project with them in the purple and cut a 1/4 yard of each for a friend the other day.

Enjoy the weekend.  It’s a sewing day for me!

::Sunday (Monday) Stash::

May 31, 2010 By Katie

I was up this morning taking advantage of the sales.  I truly don’t need anything, but when I find this wonderful print in black I buy it.  Apparently Alexander Henry only reproduces fabrics once they have enough orders.  They must have hit the magic number to reprint Heath!

It’s a home decor weight and I’ve used it numerous times for the backs of pillows.

It also comes in red, navy blue and an olive.  Contemporary Cloth has free shipping this weekend on orders of more than $50 with the code: memorial.  I think their shipping price is expensive otherwise.  I’m not sure how Memorial Weekend became shopping weekend, but I hope you are spending some time with your family.

::Sunday Stash::

December 13, 2009 By Katie

It’s been a long  time since I’ve done a Sunday Stash.  Today is a sew day and a short post is perfect.

I love orange and light blues together.  They are scattered throughout my home.  All are Amy Butler’s except for the wee flowers which are a Japanese print.  Originally I ordered them in purple (because I love purple more than any other color), and found this colorway as well.  There is a pillow in my future.

Happy Sunday!
